Thread regarding Cisco Systems Inc. layoffs

Salary ranges for Senior Software Engineer in San Jose?

Hi. I recently interviewed for the Senior Software Engineer position in Cisco in San Jose, and have just received confirmation that they will be making me an offer.

What's the salary I should be aiming for? I'm not going to take anything less then 125k pa + about 10-15% in yearly bonus (or some mix, like bigger base and lower bonus), but I wonder if there is a chance for more? Also, from what I'm reading is that I should not hope for any ongoing RSUs/options - so the question is how much I can ask from them as a signing bonus?

I have 8 years of experience, and did rather well on the interviews. And overall, given the whole layoff situation - do you think it's worth joining Cisco at the moment? The team I was interviewing with seems ok, and what they do aligns with what I want to do. But just wonder if Cisco is a good (or good enough) employer nowadays.

Thoughts?

Interesting. I've been looking at other companies because of work slowing down. I've less that 7 years experience grade 10. Around $145K, 15% bonus with $60K stocks vesting this this year.

Well, one after about 2 years and one just happened - big gap in middle.

Well, to give you one indication - I've had NO standard increases in 10 years - except for 2 promotions.

Two promotions in 10 years. That's not bad!

I had my last increase in 2013 ... and I don't expect to get one this year (although I spend two days of the previous long weekend working for Cisco).

Yes, increases will be slow. They are putting all their efforts into starting offers. It is causing some friction within the ranks. This is not a new problem at Sisqo. Been going on about 10 years. (Used to be very fair to experienced employees, not anymore.)

BTW, you will be making more than me.

Thanks for all the comments.

I got the offer. It's for a little over 130k, 15% bonus and some small batch of RSUs with long vesting.

I'll try to negotiate, as it seems that there should be some room for this on their side and also see what my other offers will be.

A little worrying is comment about lack of any increases... Is it really common to not have any increase in say 2 years? I'm asking about period like, when economy is good.

Why Cisco is hiring in San jose only to layoff later. Crazy things happen in Cisco. Shut the shop in San Jose and move to cheaper locations like RTP. you can easily survive on $100K in RTP. Its lot cheaper.

This is your best chance to negotiate. Don't settle for less. There will not be any annual salary hikes. So negotiate on RSUs and signing bonus. LR is part of life everywhere, at least you'd made your money. Apart from work, keep honing your skills to stay relevant. Benefits are good.

What ever you negotiate, don't be the top salary in that grade. When the LR Grim Reaper comes next time, you will have a target on your back.

Grade 10 bonus should be 15% (11 is 15%, 12 is 25%). RSU are manager discretion for us peons.

I think I heard somewhere that the median for SJ in grade 10 is $132K (might not be the median - it's the midpoint of the range - they don't like to hire over this value). Make sure you're happy with what you get day 1, because salary/advancement will move VERY slowly once you sign on.

Frankly, I'm really surprised that people have headcount to hire.

You may have a chance for more. A friend of mine (similar experience as you) joined about 4 months ago, and got 140k and bonus if I remember correctly 12%. Or maybe 15%. Don't know though what signin bonus he got.

I'm the one with the first reply. I was hoping you get better answers about salary. My two cents:

Senior Engineer is either Grade 8 or 10. With 8 years, you can demand grade 10.

Bonus grade 8 = 12%

Bonus grade 10 = 15% (or a number very close it it - I don't recall).

Recently, a friend got an offer for grade 10. I don't recall the precise number. It was more than 125k. Maybe 132k??? AFAIK, salaries depend on the location. That's for Silicon Valley. In the rest of the US, salaries are less (and so in other parts of the world).

I would say Cisco benefits are above average.

Work environment is bad. Don't expect your co-workers to help you to ramp on. Don't expect to understand cisco internal documents. I don't know if that work-culture is common in Silicon Valley or not. Maybe it is and you have no other choice.

OP - You are big idiot if you are happy with 125k at 8 years exp. May be you are too dumb and happy that at-least you are getting an offer. I would advice dont spoil your career. Just RUN

You will realize the meaning of my words after 4-5 years if you join in here.

At present, it's between $55k and $78k per annum. Good luck. We need smart folks like yourself.

Your best luck is not to join. Very toxic environment and pretty much the same in every group.

We have almost annual layoffs. I, for myself, don't see a pattern. It me, it looks like every year there is a focus on some other BUs. So, your job will not be save.
