IBM Needs to Come Clean About Its Cloud Business

"Amazon is widely considered No. 1 in cloud. But the lack of information from other contenders means industry analysts must compile their own estimates of companies’ cloud revenue and profit. Some reports show less revenue for cloud than IBM itself would claim; others simply omit the company completely.

The most upbeat assessment comes from Synergy Research Group. Two weeks ago it said that IBM was No. 3 behind Amazon and Microsoft in share of cloud revenue.

Goldman Sachs software analyst Heather Bellini notes that Amazon generated $8.9 billion in annual cloud-computing revenue in the trailing 12-month period through March. That compares to her estimate of $1.8 billion in revenue for Microsoft and a little over half a billion dollars for Google. Salesforce.com (CRM), the poster child of cloud computing, was also on her list. IBM wasn’t.

A report from back in May by Eric Sheridan of UBS estimated that IBM had 7% of a cloud-computing market that totaled $25 billion last year, which would imply revenue of $1.8 billion in 2015, just slightly ahead of Google. Sanford C. Bernstein’s Toni Sacconaghi also thinks IBM has less than $2 billion in annual cloud revenue.

Such numbers, and the omission by Bellini of any mention of IBM, are in stark contrast to IBM’s own disclosures. The company said in July that its trailing 12-month cloud revenue was $11.6 billion. Of that, IBM said the part of that figure closest to what is regarded as true cloud was $6.7 billion."

Hmmmmmmm. . .whom to believe??

if we were to come clean on this one, it'd require a detailed breakdown, on R&D, dev, all costs and revenues - the wall street would freak out - so, let's keep it quiet

IBM is all smoke and mirrors. Cloud software was doing poorly so they reorganized to now include Systems software into Cloud (since Systems SW was doing great in 2015).
