Resume

I recommend getting your resume professionally re-done. After 12 years at cisco I didn't update my resume with industry recruiter standards. There's a lot of deals on groupon too. I just had mine done! I feel more confident. Good luck!

Please remove all Cisco babel from your resume, SP, GSP, GET/GES, write your resume so your child could understand it . A lot of times resumes are vetted by secretaries, junior recruiters and so on, you want to give them all, the opportunity to understand your value.

Change your resume for each job you apply for, make sure it is appropriate for the role and the company's goals you are applying for. You do not respond to every challenge with one answer, so why have a standard resume?

Do a research on the hiring manager, linkedin is a good source , slot in your resume things that the hiring manager is passionate about , if he is a Golfer, your resume says you have started taking Golfing lessons! In an interview you want talk about other things besides the role.

@ Long Time soon to be former manager - This is what I am seeing as well. Sound advice. In RTP, have heard of people using this service and being very satisfied with the product and the results: http://rtpresumes.com/

Her templates show a lot of the same tips you have highlighted here.

Redoing your resume and looking for a job before getting hit in the next LR round is an excellent idea. Resume styles have changed. Not sure you need to pay someone to have it done, but get it updated and keep your Linked In Profile updated.

Some tips:

  1. Nobody uses Objective anymore. Your objective is to get a job. Move on.

  2. Put a brief summary at the top.

  3. For each position give a brief description (4-5 lines max) and 4-6 bullet points of accomplishments that are above and beyond your job duties.

  4. Make the Accomplishments specific. Use action verbs, with the results. For example, Chuck could say "Devastated Cisco routing and switching business by laying off the Cisco Fellows that invented routing and switching. This resulted in a temporary 3% bump in stock price and enabled competition in the marketplace."

  5. If you have more than 15 years of experience don't focus on early career. If it is relevant for some reason, then include it but very briefly and don't put dates on it.
