to someone thinking about relocating to work at Verizon HQ in Jersey in technology delivery?
What got you to start? What keeps you? What drives you to this site? What would drive you to warn someone off?
I don't work for Verizon but am considering it.
I was part of the 12/15 RIF. I started working full time in April at a miserable job making less money. I'm currently looking again. Of those from the 12/15 RIF that I stayed in touch with, about 50% of us are working again.
(12/31/15 RIF class) .. I am over 50 and cant find employment even after being acceptable to a big pay cut(I never expected to make the same as VZ salary) but if you are not Indian, you can forget getting another IT job. Health care/prescriptions will cut into your retiree money. But I plan to keep looking ...Part-time work is looking kind of good and working for a Millennial (i.e the movie: The Intern) after managing over 30 in my VZ time) will be a challenge I will accept..
It would be interesting to know how many from the 12/31/15 RIF class are actually working full-time now. I know that I am not, and I know of at least three others who have not found a new job either.
So sorry to hear that. I hope you come across something. Try looking in the local government websites - things you wouldn't think of like the water department. So many people got laid off last December. It boggles the mind. We are living on a cut in pay and the health benefits with very high deductibles, but very nice coworkers. That is worth a lot.
Stay away if you value your career and money. Laid off 12/31, have not been able to get another IT job since then. used up all savings, unemployment, sold all worldly goods. I poverty now on govt assistance. Thanks Lowell for offshoring my career to India
I browse this site from time to time, and based on what I see in the news and reports from various sources, I ask: why anyone will attempt re employment with this company?, there are lots of opportunities out there to take advantage of, get rid of this fear of seeking employment somewhere else and face it head on,in my experience there is nothing tat work for a company you are proud to be part of.
All you need is kneepads and the ability to swallow to succeed. Not being white is a #2 bigee here now also.
I say that if you already live nearby - certainly give it a try for a year. Housing is expensive in NJ. As for working - you never know. If someone likes you enough to hire you, you might be safe as long as they aren't re-orged away from you. That was our experience. If you are the type of person who HAS to know your job is safe then you shouldn't work there or you will have constant anxiety. Skills are not part of the layoff formula. The medical benefits are fantastic. Going to miss them when they end this week. Don't expect to retire there, so keep up with your contacts and resume. If you find a job with the government, that might be better. Good luck.
My advice : don't walk, run... away... from the entire company, but especially IT. IMO VZ is a toxic dump and the worst of the worst is in IT in NJ. There are far better opportunities out there.
Vz is a company in decline and the moral is at an all time low, BUT it has provided me with a good good income and benefits. So... If you're single and Vz is willing to pay relocation benefits, go for it, but don't buy a house here and keep your resume updated. There is no loyalty and they will send you packing as soon as they can.
If you are a diversity candidate, I think this could be a good opportunity for you.

PNB is right. Verizon is a declining company in a declining sector. This is not a Growth sector anymore, as much as it is stealing market share from one another. Every action Verizon takes can be placed in the context of the big ship taking on water. They are either trying to bail faster and/or patch the ever springing holes in the hull. All this while trying to keep the passengers calm but telling the crew to prepare the lifeboats. Either way, its just a matter of time before the barge goes down.
Do it but don't think it going be a career job,cause they will lay you off and replace you as soon as they use you cause that's how they work unless you have friends in very high places in this company..just a word of caution ,keep your opportunities open and if you find something better,just keep looking even if you take the job
Dont do it because wthin a year your job will be outsouced to Verizon IT in India.
To start with New Jersey is a dump if your not from there.
Verizon is on a downward swing so understand you will see endless change, re orgs and layoffs. For me, it was great experience to get on my resume, the pay and benefits are good. But Verizon had its heyday. Unless something g amazing happens, the downward spiral will continue.
On last thing. The Basking Ridge culture is one of backstabbing, covering your a$$ and everyone is posturing to make themselves look important constantly at any cost. Basically, a culture of greed and fear.
