Next year is going to be it for me. I see the semiconductor industry going the radio, TV, phone way. Chips will be a commodity from Asia. Will stay at 10nm or 7 nm in the next decade, unless something disruptive happens. By then Intel will be irrelevant.

Next year for me too. OEM will start abandoning Intel, that will be the beginning of the end.
I see myself here until BK drains the swamp and i am left with noplace to hide.
I would have retired at intel, but BK put an end to that, one L4 in 20 years.
My mistake, I had the opportunity to leave 3 years ago, should have left, but can't complain about the golden parachute, thanks BK and current Intelers. The extra money was plenty sweet.

Moore's law: Intel will lose the lead this year. Volumes ramp on 10nm from Samsung and TSMC will be 10x to 50x larger in volume than intel. Guess who is motivated and gets ROI, ain't intel.
x86: The computer is like an appliance, you get a new one when your old one breaks, Very little reason buy just to upgrade. Total volume about 200 million not enough to fund Moore's Law
Server/Cloud: Still makes money, a lot of money, so much that ARM and MS, Amazon, FB and others are all looking at the ARMy as is the Chinese, the came will soon be over.
IoT, Foundry, Modems, Memory: Commodity, you think Intel can compete with TSMC, Samsung and the Chinese companies that are willing to sell chips for less than 10 bucks and GM less than 30%.
Outlook Intel needs to lay off another 20-30K in 2017 and 2018 as they need to scale back big time.
They missed the mobile and continue to strike out
Will sell one more round of RSUs and that's it. Which gives me about 6 months give or take. It will be a happy day for me!
I got kicked out this summer so I can only theorize what I was thinking it would have happened if I had survived. I was lucky enough to have the freedom to work in Intel in something I loved where I drove multiple IT technologies and worked with multiple business units without having to specialize. I never felt as a chip on a board that management could just move me around wherever they felt it was needed. But I saw the writing on the wall that my management resented me for that (which is why I am in this mess) and begun asking me to have a more generic role.
So, if I had survived ACT I would have had to take on generic assignments and roles. Yes, I would have still be paid well, but money is not a true motivator. Also, if i was a generic IT engineer then the level of competition would feel stronger and I would have to always be looking out for me, politically speaking. I would have probably be looking for jobs outside of Intel where I could continue working on why i want and not where management places me.
My Intel hiring agreement for staying at Intel ends around FOCAL time. Unless I can get transferred into a better, interesting job where I am leading and managing something of importance - I will leave soon after. I have no career growth in my current dead end job with repeatitive and mundane work. I am over qualified to be excel and powerpoint pusher.

Great post, OP! I had spent my entire career in semiconductors right from the very first IBM PC until getting the ISP earlier this year. I never would have dreamed that the revolution would have died after only 30 years. You are correct. It's gone the way of the radio. The best, most exciting decade for growth was the '80s. It has been trending down ever since. I don't understand how the employees at Intel can even consider their work as a career anymore. Much of the blame goes to stupid mgmt decisions while the rest goes to government tax structure forcing industries offshore. It's a real shame.
Gotta get out of this hellhole ASAP.
