Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

A Store non-commission safe or not?

Been in an A store for awhile and survived the cuts a month ago that involved Exp Specialists and Ops. I was moved to the newly created Retail Support. Did they really just create this new position to lay us off 3 months later? Am I safe in an A store? Should I try and move to sales instead? Are they eliminating the RSS role after just making it? Any ideas and comments are appreciated and good luck to all!

@5tcm - a valid argument if Verizon actually continues to operate it's own stores or makes them all authorized retailers.

@KEKiemt-2ebl No offense, but it doesn't seem like you're very in tune with how stores work. Who is going to do the inventory and merchandising of a store if you lay off ASM's and RSS roles? Matter of fact, the RSS role is less than 2 months old. Why would they spend millions training people for this role and then eliminate it 3 months later? Also, if there are no RSS employees then ASM's would be the ones to pick up the slack of store inventory and merchandising. If anything, RSS would be safe as it's already stripped to the bare bones with most locations having just 1 or 2. ASM's I think will be cut down to 1 or 2 per store. My opinion of course.

This is a response to the last reply. On the west coast I know of a couple of DMs that have asked for detailed info on what their SMs do on a daily basis. A month ago they were having SMs report on what reps are asking them to do and figure out a way that the rep can do it instead of coming to a manager. Additionally I know of a few SM positions that they are choosing to do acting roles instead of filling with a permanent position. Seems like something is off and it's almost like they are preparing for something.

There's a lot of fear mongering on these boards... Currently over 60 SM positions posted across the country so it's very doubtful there is going to be a sweeping elimination of that position. More likely to be a per location decision, if any.

Anyone that thinks their job is safe is living in a world of illusion. My recommendation is to polish up your resume and start applying for jobs outside of the company. The wireless sector has stopped growing a long time ago and now the carriers are just buying business from each other. If you truly believe that a company can keep growing off of innovative products like HUM, HPC, wireless tablets (when all smartphones have hotspots) and mobile broadband cards you're a fool a deserve to go down with this ship.

Thank you for all the responses guys. To be honest I'm just looking for a little reassurance as this time next year, I will have ordered my cap and gown for graduation. I'm pretty close but it would be hard to do without Verizon's tuition reimbursement. Once I get that, then whatever happens, at least I got a degree out of VZW

Surprise, surprise! We continue to cut jobs like we are a struggling business even though we have been ranked in the top 30 richest companies in the world for several years running. Why are we cutting jobs? Costs. Why cut costs? Increase profitability. The great minds in finance continue to fail at their jobs. If you decrease input, you decrease output. Simple. How about the geniuses that be take a look at shipping? Marketing? Advertising? Overall reasoning? I continue to get accessories sent priororty overnight that come in a single box that are valued at $19.99 or less. We have outdated light boxes and continue to get many POP materials for them that are countiously throw away due to over shipment. Don't get me started on our ads. T mobile, Sprint, AT&T, Straight Talk, etc continue to prodcast ads claiming exactly what our customers want yet we continue to ignore them. We claim to put our customers first and that we are a business that values integrity? I believe my definition of integrity differs from the folks in NJ/NY. How about another buyout? Maybe that will turn the tides. I'm sure we can get a steal on Hotmail. The people pulling the strings are so out of touch with reality it is laughable. So let's make a great business decision and cut the jobs of people that keep the doors open and expect them to do better than they did when more employees were there. (See output curve). Oh and even better idea! Let's keep the whining landline folks around even though that side of the business has been obsolete for years and spit in our face when we went to work in their territory just to try and get a little ahead in our lives and they acted like they wouldn't do the same. Retail and more specifically bottom line retail is the reason anyone within the company gets a paycheck. LMA and his stockholders couldn't careless. Maybe it is time we all unionize. Ugh Oh. That might strike a nervous cord and get some attention. To all the DMs, FMs, GMs, SMs, RSSs, SS, Sr Ops Analysist, SMB Specialist. Good Luck. Try to forget about all of the sacrifices you have made over the years so our stock prices can increase a few percentage points at best. That is selfish of us. I completely understand that we do a job for a BILLION dollar company that looks out for their best interest, but come on, if they can get rid of you do you know how much money that would save? Yes! Those ridiculous trainings are necessary. Yes! Completely changing our logo and image was necessary, have you seen Nike, WalMart, McDonald's, etc change their logo? We are trailblazing. Your sacrifice has made the company countless amounts of money for a very small wage, while missing countless lifelong memories and asking ridiculous expectations. I am sure when we all get the call we will get a Thank you, because that is what a company that has a core value of "Integrity" does.

Leave the company asap. My recommendation is to leave . Polish your resume and leave . There are better jobs out there . I was an 6 year OS released in october and just found a position that paid greater than my exit rate/ending salary at Vzw . Vzw under pays wireless employees . That or try to go landline which is hard to get into but also pays very well . Landline customer service starts at ~$30/hr. It's clear this company doesn't know where it's going and is making major cutbacks in retail.

2015 6k Job cuts Vzw managers

2016 October retail so/es elimination

2016/2017 closing of 6 Vzw call cemters

2016 elimination of 500 aol jobs

(On the other hand spring 2016 40k landline employees went on strike; FF to today 40k union employees kept their Job plus they hired 1k more employees and got bonuses #unionstromg )

And trust me life is peaceful outside of Vzw .

Agree with @gie if your in an A store you should be fine. For now...

But use your time at Verizon to prepare for the next step in your career somewhere else. Because Verizon is not somewhere one may hope to spend their entire working life at. They just don't care about employees and the reality is Verizon is one big meat grinder.
