@clc @kbc Austin lab layoff rumors started after the Solaris layoff rumors. There should be some solid information by now, shouldn't there?

It took about a month for the impact of this canceled project to go public with layoffs.

Look at HP for example of the future of oracle. HP split to HPE and undergoing another split. Just ask HPE people and read their layoff page.

Additionally oracle has not been a transforming company along with intel and to a small extent Microsoft. The legacy hardware companies waited too long to make necessary changes. A lot too little. There's a little bit of hope. I say oracle will be absorbed for tr poeces that sirvive in the next 10 years.

My reference was the disbelief of layoffs. Another post has said sparc Solaris funding has been canceled for 17Q3. RAPID cancelation was known at least one month ago now the layoffs announced. We should expect same for these other rumoured canceled projects. Time will tell unless you are specifically impacted and know. I am not. I am simply here as support. The industry is in a meltdown. It will take time to find jobs. This is a completely new scenario facing tech. It's not just an economic downturn but the perfect storm of cloud and shift to commodity hardware and economic downturn in overall IT enterprise spending. Not to mention emerging markets have not turned out as emerging as forecast. It's going to get worse.

Project RAPID was not based on SPARC. Those (ex) employees in Austin have an excellent track record and will find a job without any issues, particularly in Austin.

What bearing does it have on those Solaris and SPARC plans with rumored 50% layoffs? Lots of smoke, but no fire?

Let me google this for you, first result: http://www.512tech.com/technology/oracle-announces-austin-layoffs/brM3CB7FolCGZmZXgEUH8O/

"Software company Oracle Corp. told state officials it is laying off 71 workers in Austin.

In a letter sent to the Texas Workforce Commission, as required by federal law when a company does a mass layoff, Oracle said it is laying off employees who worked on "Project RAPID" at its Riata Park facility in Northwest Austin.

The Riata Park facility is not closing, Oracle said in its letter.

"Rather, Oracle is discontinuing work on Project RAPID at the Riata Park facility, and for that reason, must lay off the employees at the Riata Park facility who are assigned to Project RAPID and have not found alternate positions at Oracle."

According to Oracle's website, Project RAPID is a hardware and software project that targets large-scale data management and analysis.

Affected workers have already been notified, Oracle said. The laid-off employees will receive 60 days of pay, two months of employer-paid health insurance and an employer match based on their current 401(k) contribution, the company reported. "
