I've been working at HP (now HPE) for a while. A bunch of people in my office got WFR in the last round of layoffs. I have an offer on the table at Intel. After reading this message board, I don't know if it's worth moving to this company?
Anyone on here left HP, HPE, Dell, AMD or other company for Intel? What are your thoughts?
Current employee here, Please don't kid yourself when you say you are a happy software engineer at Intel. Intel is anything but a software company. The software guys are treated as a second class citizen. One rarely see focus on software design at Intel. Intel takes pride in shouting out loud that more than 95% of there staff is technical, managers included. They are so out of sync with any fundamental software design concepts and upgrading a system really doesn't qualify you for a DRA. I did get 2 DRAs in my rather short stay here btw. The utter mockery of the focal could be seen rampant at the hand of middle management, looking for a job elsewhere, will give notice soon, no point of staying for focal delivery.
I was recruited away from a good job by Intel. And ISP'd less than 18 months later...ironically because my manager gave me a lower stock allocation for being "new to Intel."
Coming to Intel was a mistake. The culture is horribly toxic and broken. Nothing will make any sense if you've come from somewhere that has any customer focus, sense of urgency or understanding of the market. You'll either resign yourself to become part of the problem or hate every.single.moment.of.working.there.

This website paints Intel with dark colors, because it is mostly attended by those who were kicked out earlier this year. Some of those feel huge disappointment. The last layoffs episode has been percieved as an ugly action. But they got nice seperation packages. Much higher than other companies provide. I personally met a bunch of layed-off friends that percieved their own layoff as fair and respectable.
Other companies layoff as well from time to time. There is no job security in any corporate.
Regarding the future of Intel. You can never know. It looks grey these days. But Intel overcame some crisises in the past decades (PowerPC, Alpha, Opteron, Athlon, Sparc, Transmeta. Where are all these threatening competitors these days?)
I stay because I like my day job. I like the challenges, my team, the supportive atmosphere and I'm able to develope my skills at Intel.
Take everything in proportions.

You know, I got VSP last spring and took it (Hillsboro, Oregon). On my last day, I kissed JF3 in Hillsboro goodbye and rode a bicycle from Hillsboro, Oregon to Bellingham, Washington and started a new position at Intel. It is Escaped Mental Patient From Intel Corporation. And I love it. I am now fixing vintage vacuum tube radios for the Spark Musuem here in Bellingham and it is fun! It like when Judy Garland says, "Toto, we're not in Kansas anymore!"
I started to say that moving to Intel will at least get you a year of employment without risk of being laid off. But then remember a downturn when Intel retracted offers that it made and were accepted by about-to-be college grads. That move was right up there with giving 20 year veterans 5 minutes to get out. You will have no job security at Intel unless you have an employment contract, and Intel likely won't do that unless you're at the VP level. Look elsewhere. If you're good you won't be happy at Intel.
Comes down to what you do and why you are leaving and what are the alternatives and your timeline.
Intel, I absolutely will tell you never has been closer to utter implosion and has nothing to do with exterior market trends, macro economics, or competitors. Those in TMG know why!

Well, only if you really NEED a job and have a hard time finding one. If that's not the case then by all means, take it, you can move on in a heartbeat when you're let go through one of the layoffs. In other words... if you treat your company like a career (like you're married to it and don't believe in divorice), then Intel isn't the place for you. Honestly though... aren't most companies like that these days? I think the days of long term careers and large pensions are gone, or at least going by the wayside.
