Engineering grads start at grade 4 in the UK and most typically top out at grade 8. Grade 10's are few and far between and I don't know a single millennial grade 10 in the UK with most aged 40 and above. There is also a pretty low percentage of tGr 10's in Engineering. Maybe things are different in the US or in different businesss but that's the way things are in UK Engineering. Teams are getting younger and made up of lower grades. i.e. cheaper. If you get a car allowance and fuel card then you must feel the heat of the scope on your back and that young grad you've been asked to mentor will soon be doing your job. That's the reality of working at Cisco today. Happy holidays!

When does VSS UK start? January?

Car starts at G10 now. That's not super senior - some depts will hire grads on that grade! It increases with higher grade but not dramatically

I'm an ex employee from the UK.

It's nice to talk about the car allowance but you have to be pretty senior to get that (that rules out most of the millennials - I know one who went to grade whatever just after the execs decided to move the car allowance to the next grade up. I want to say he was moving to 8 and the car allowance was going to grade 10+, but it's too long ago for me to remember).

Certainly no living allowance... and I worked at locations in Berkshire + Bedfont! All you got was a higher starting salary, but still not high enough to make it affordable.

TTC in the U.K. is waaay lower than US. Car is worth about £700/month if you get it. Base is waaaay less. And you get smaller shares. Pension is up to 8%, whoopy do.

Ref living expenses in the UK, I've not heard that at all. You can't get much more expensive than London in the UK in terms of cost of living and there is no living allowance

* correction, Cisco pays 20 of those! 54

Not every country in Europe is like that. In IRL we would get 2 weeks statutory redundancy payment from the govt for every year worked + 4 weeks per full year worked from Cisco. So, 5.5 years worked = 30 weeks of pay before tax. Cisco pays 24 of those.

WOW. That is a heavy hit. I'd imagine any multi I national has to think long and hard about setting up an office in the EU given that exposure.

Germany voluntary leave (date expired already):

1.9 @ Years in service @ (Annual Base + OTE divided by 12).

Germany redundancy:

1.5 @ Years in service @ (Annual Base + OTE divided by 12).

In France and Italy for example employees are very difficult to lay off. General rule is if a company make profit the employer if not allowed to layoff people. This mean a lot of individual deals/cases need to be negotiated with employees with result of a very high severance package.

Base salary is lower in UK, that's true, but if you factor-in car allowance and better pension contribution, the difference is not as big. Not sure if that's true, but have heard that some UK locations are also getting some living expenses allowance? To offset high housing cost?

Average PTO is 25 days a year in UK, salaries generally less than US though

EMEAR covers a large number of countries, all with their own specific labour laws. If that is correct for Germany, I suspect that's an anomaly - certainly wouldn't get that in the UK

I can believe the package that the Germans get. At my former company, they shut down the European HQ in Brussells. The Systems Engineers there go the equivalent of 4 years salary (if memory serves me correct) plus lots of advanced notice. The ironic thing is that another company picked up the engineers and they supported the same products as they supported before (i.e. essentially got to keep their exact same jobs plus got the huge severance). Plus as somebody already mentioned, PTO days given by European companies are much more liberal. For example, I believe in the UK and France they give around 6 weeks vacation. There are people from the UK commenting on my site, so maybe they can confirm.

Packages (and generally - benefits like PTO, leaves of absence etc) were always far better in EMEAR than they are in US, so I think the 400k Euro figure may be realistic.

@KQXa6nj-7ybx: What?! The 'average joe worker' in Germany gets USD $428,000 to leave? Are you kidding?

Cut-n-paste that Jive post here, please. That # can't be right.

As a 20 years and grade 12 Cisco veteran in Germany I decided to took the maximum package (410K Euro gross see: https://cisco.jiveon.com/docs/DOC-1609744) and walked out of the office in Munich with a big smile. First thing what I did was paying my mortgage 100% and looked around in my network for a new job. After two weeks I got job offer at a smaller company at 30% less salary and less politics. But who cares, no mortgage, kids are already out of the house, no debt etc. THANKS CISCO!!!

Was working with a red badge and she got 1 month notice with effective end 12/23.

Our management is making noise about having to find some red badges to reduce before end of 2Q. There's no travel budget at all. Things look really tight. Got a bad feeling about February.

In Galway, Ireland we have mandatory attendance at fun fund events due to previous poor attendance. Holiday team lunches are also mandatory. Expect your manager to be on your case if you fail to attend the mandatory fun!

These days attendence very thin in any staff party , pooh bah lecture session or team outing. People slink away as fast as they can. Managers call up on cellphones to track people down.

@KQXa6nj-2akf: Because those execs will find new homes somewhere else within Cisco AND will get a bonus while you will get canned.

They smile and drink deep of the Kool-Aid, you get it in the shorts.

We had our division "holiday party" this week after it was announced our product was dead. I don't think even 1/2 the division was in attendance. All the execs looked really happy talking to people like we had just gone IPO or made our first $1B.

It's pretty awful if they lay off people so close to the holidays and shut-down but nothing would surprise me with these guys anymore.

Blues and Reds were impacted the last TWO cycles.

This post smells of "troll". I'd be surprised if there are anymore LR moves before the shutdown or the end of the next quarter.
