Building that foundry capability

Smith conceded that the company's revenue and unit volumes from contract chip customers are quite small today. However, he stressed that having the capability to service those customers has "a lot of option value to [Intel] as a company. ... But I don't want to minimize that the capability to flip it around and show that foundry face to our internal [system-on-a-chip] organization is absolutely key," Smith said.

He added that he and Intel Client and Internet of Things President Murthy Renduchintala want to make sure that Intel's own system-on-a-chip teams can "land a product very quickly and take advantage of our Moore's Law benefit."

A really important capability

One of the big strengths of the contract chip manufacturers is that their manufacturing processes, design tools, and intellectual-property libraries are all designed to allow chip designers to quickly put together a diverse range of system-on-a-chip products.

That makes a lot of sense, given that, historically, those contract-chip makers have been required to service a lot of different customers with a wide-ranging set of requirements. TSMC, for example, builds everything from Wi-Fi chips all the way to high-performance graphics processors.

Intel, on the other hand, has built its business primarily around high-performance microprocessors targeted at the personal-computer and server markets designed by in-house teams.

As Intel tries to push into new areas, and as its core markets require an increasingly diverse set of products, the company needs to make sure that its internal design teams aren't hamstrung by the very manufacturing technology that Intel management cites as a key strength._

WTF? WTF! So now INTEL says to ARM server fables competitors: c'mon, guys, we are your friends, so we are going to build with our superlative technology for you ARM servers, which will beat our server technology to the ground and impound us out of the game???

Bwahahahaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa... :-)))

INTEL Morons! Incredible, isn't it?

Stacy as leader of TMG knows how to talk the pretty talk to fool wallstreet.

Sadly he is a bean counter and has no clue how broken and inflexible FSM factories are, how tall the order is to update intel design rules and design infrastructure, and worst the arrogance of how PTD works with people. They have never been customer friendly and arrogant. They challenging every request from their possible customers making working with them difficult and slow.

Today intel process, design rules, infrastructure are so foundry unfriendly that for an external design team to come in will result in quarters of delay.

Last the fans are small making prototyping totally disruptive unlike TSMC or Samsung giga factory.

Pretty much saying intel can do foundry is like saying Porsche can drop down and compete in the Camry/Accord space.

The last thing intel had was process leadership but that is also gone this year as Samsung and TSMC ramp 10nm and intel continues to limp another two years on 14nm. But the time intel starts 10nm ramp the foundry will be on 7nm.

BK and the rest of TMG management have totally ruined the core of the company.

The ARMy and Foundrys have won, tipping point pairs and more ACTs are coming to TMG big time !

@xcj, every time I post my thoughts, avalanche of new posts by your trolls (INTEL HR) come to play... And now you are asking even more stupid question then your moronic boss Smith. :-(

I am glad. I am hurting you big time, and this makes me very happy. You all, managing INTEL structure deserve every bit and piece of it. You know why.

OK, I'll tell you what should be done. Technology Manufacturing Group should be spin-off out of INTEL. Then is has slim success (around 20%) of survival. Like this... It is another futile attempt to make monies out of desperation.

Sorry, @xcj, game over. Please, try again.

The logic that Stacy lays out seems sound and reasonable, and It appears to be a strategy that aligns with the new global economy. The world has changed buddy! Haven't you heard? Economies are now strengthened by symbiotic relationships, collaboration and the sharing of information. The old guard way of business, where Intel locks themselves in a tower surrounded by a defensive moat and secretly builds the next chip that will dominate all, is no longer sustainable. What would you have them do exactly?
