Thread regarding Intel Corp. layoffs

If Microsoft can do it, maybe Intel can

Interesting article in the WSJ. If Microsoft can do it, maybe Intel can

Look Who’s Back! Microsoft, Rebooted, Emerges as a Tech Leader Dec. 16, 2016 10:07 a.m. ET

After years of missteps, the software giant is among the few titans of the 1990s to figure out the post-desktop world

Satya Nadella decided to shake things up. At last year’s meeting, the first he fully planned after taking over as chief executive officer in 2014, he broke with tradition by inviting new chiefs of companies Microsoft had recently acquired, according to an executive who attended.

Some Microsoft senior leaders complained to Mr. Nadella, saying the new hands didn’t have the titles or tenure to attend the two-day event at Suncadia Resort, a mountain getaway 80 miles east of Seattle. Their presence breached the protocol established by Microsoft’s two former CEOs, Bill Gates and Steve Ballmer. Another half dozen newcomers attended this spring.

In response to one executive, Mr. Nadella said, “We’re doing this because of the insights they bring.”

OP here again - Maybe if Intel started listening to employees when they are bringing up VALID POINTS, yet not what upper management thinks... they can turn the ship around too. Thoughts? Comments?

It is the Tiranic and no matter the talent of the crew and how many 3D they have it has hit the iceberg and is going down. The sinking is a certainty! Tick tock tick tock how much time on your personal clock at intel and is it enough ?

Considering the fact x86 decline in PC and rest of traditional segment, BK's strategy to venture in to IOT, drone and new avenues are good strategy. Intel has lot of talent, however it's very poorly managed. Intel will never succeed in any new segment due to poor management and cost of design/manufacturing. Intel need lot of management level changes to turn Titanic around.

It was all down hill faster and faster after Andy Grove left the building. Started with CRB and his wasted billions, that was followed by PSO retrenchment on x86 and missed Apple moment. Continued denial of ARMy and mobile and the tipping point passed with the BK clown from San Jose State. How did such a great company become a fad chaser versus define the path. TSMC and Samsung now are the silicon kings with China behind them.

Qualcomm, Apple and SoftBank riding the ARMy to the top.

Qualcomm crushing modems.

Nvidia kilking graphics and AI.

The clown of course chasing them all with 10nm burning the house down

Intel would be great again if it weren't for the ineptness of the BoD, BK, and all of his minions.

@KVn0cnn-qfo Let's not forget commodity memories and compete against Micron and Samsung.

Let's compete in modems against Qualcomm.

Let's compete in IoT which is a $1-10 buck chip.

Let's compete in graphics and AI against Nvidia that have been don fro for their whole company life.

BK is a total idiot with proud lineage rising thru manufacturing and BS from San Jose State. No wonder the ideas are BS!

Brian is chasing drones, mica bracelets and magic toothbrushes from reality tv.

His advisors have told him that is the way to innovate.

His advisors have been at Intel for 30 years.

They have no clue as to how the outside world operates.

Intel is no MS, in its business it has TSMC and Samsung as manufacturing competitors and they are now beating Intel in scale and technology offerings.

In architecture they have ARM, Nvidia, and Qualcomm and others way ahead in respective areas of low power, graphics, AI, and modems. Intels history in graphics and new archietciture thrust is abysmal. Current things like multi core and IPC were all demonstrated by others before intel copied them as their own.

Intels last competitive advantage was process and that is gone and 10nm ramp will ruin the company due to decisions made 6 years ago which no daily TF today can recover. Past the tipping point of no return is Intel! Who is on there without lifevest or lifeboat is indeed a poor soul!

One company has an MBA from one of the best schools in US

The other company is led by a BS from a school where the average entering freshman has a GPA of 3.3 and SAT of 1500.. The schools is so bad the only candidates we can consider from there are URM.

You want to put money on which company has which?

Which company got a leader who makes smart decisions before the herds and which just follows herd mentality?

Intel doesn't have a leader, and the minions of mindless management are following this phony leader instead of being outraged, disposing of this knucklehead, and taking the company in a winning direction.

Microsoft can pivot quickly due to being a software company. They have little capital investments compared to Intel (fans).

The business model of PCs is broken, so Microsoft pivots to service based solutions. Intel - what can they do to address the business model disruption?

If Intel wants to succeed in mobile and iot, they need to necessarily accept lower margins. They also need to be good at those things - good luck with that.
