Posted on Watching IBM

Please post anonymously: 60 Minutes is doing a story to air in January. I was 1 of 6 flown to NY to be interviewed. It's about IBM & others sending US jobs over seas & the work S B is doing. They said they would tell us exact date, I will share when told.

I was hired in 1981 and had a good ride with a good company and retired in 2013 after being laid off. I remember in the late 80's when IBM introduced voluntary separations...something like two weeks pay for every year you had worked. From there and for almost the next three decades IBM systematically released it's US forces as the separation packages diminished. The writing was on the wall folks. If you got hired after 1985 and thought you were special guess what? You weren't. Too many US based employees put all their eggs into the IBM basket and thought they were the exception. They wanted what their "father's" had received in term of retirement benefits and that was their goal and hence, their ultimate disappointment. Yes, I got my retirement nut but the last ten years leading up to my qualification were filled with uncertainty, insecurity, mental anguish and stress. Several times I had a target on my back and I took the steps to find a new job within the company. I needed that retirement paycheck I'd worked so hard to earn. I trained countless teams in China, India, Brazil, Mexico, Canada and Russia. I was even asked to be the liaison between IBM China and IBM US when the original liaison decided to leave. Keep your skills current and your resume up-to-day. I met a very c---y IBM rep on a plane ride to Florida a few months ago...he'd just been promoted, flirted shamelessly with the flight attendance (she wasn't having any part of it) said he just resigned Hertz (couldn't share the details with me...ha) last time I checked him out he was GONE. I can assure you that was not in HIS plan. Best advise is to take care of yourself first and network network network. KQ

IBM is in the business to make money...not to make employees rich.

How did they select who to be interviewed? I would like to share my experience selling IBM services that enabled IBM customer's to ship jobs offshore! So glad I got RA'd and don't have to do that any more.
