Thread regarding Chevron Corp. layoffs

John Watson on CNBC.......

I used to read about how people on this forum felt about their CEO (or former CEO) and think that can't be right, he seems like a fine business man and then I read this article after Chevron released over 15K employees over the last 18 months. His quotation "I think it's a missed opportunity for some companies to not try to retain their workforce and keep them stimulated over time." Unbelievable. Can't believe this guy has such a big heart!!

The Dynegy / NNP fiasco happened on O'Reilly's watch, not Watson's.

Watson just knows how to sell a story. The number of bad decisions (Dynergy, cubicles in Houston and the cost of reverting, etc.) he has been making is astonishing and yet he made it to the CEO role. He looks at everything through numbers. And then the next CEO is going to Breber who is another numbers guy who can be quite abrasive in his macho comments. A finance professional should never be in the lead position

The stockholders should pass a resolution to revoke Watson as CEO.

By far, the worst CEO in my 35+ year career

So true, 1vqs. Google already had an excellent language translator tool and app called "Google Translate". Someone needs to invent an app called "CEO Translate" where the user can adjust settings within the app to moderate and filter out the lies, double speak, half truths and outright BS. In the case of understanding what Watson would say, you'll need to adjust the speech translator up to a full "10" just to get the really scoop.

Watson is the typical corporate figure head, he has no problem stating complete lies on major TV programs. He is from the PC center of the USA😂 To be a 1 handicap golfer takes more than 25 hrs of practice a week. Google should create software that autocorrects corporate BS so stockholders, employees and customers can read the truth.

@1zyl, you cannot beleive the complaints about Watson playing golf at a time when 650 employees were laid off in Houston. He is the first person who should exemplify The Chevron Way. Obviously, that is only another example of words on paper only. These high flying executives always think they are above the rules they set for the rank and file employee.

Liars like Watson will have their heyday in the next administration (a.k.a. neo-nazi regime of Trump).

Can't believe the complaints about Watson playing golf during a period of layoffs. He's entitled to business socializing (part of the job) as well as a personal life.

If one were to extend the argument of the whiners, then we should all give up any kind of enjoyable activity as long as bad things are happening in the world (like the humanitarian catastrophes in Iraq and Syria.

Get realistic, people!

What a line of crap by Watson (in reference to CNBC piece)! Guess it's much easier to double speak when you're the guy on the golden seat.

I agree with @KYqFjFB-1qcc regarding anticipation of what kind of salary and perks get tossed around in 2017 between JW and the CVX board. Wouldn't be surprised if EX-CEO from Wells-Fargo gets a special "EOI Severance Package".

Haven't read the article link points to yet, but let's see what he (and the board) give those still retained and those who got part of 2016 before being cut loose in terms of CIP. More interesting is what they all take for salaries and stock options this year.

One thing for sure, Rex Tillerson really needs to provide Yahoo and the Trump organization a photo that does't have JW in the frame. Bad company!

Okay, to translate what JW said, the current market conditions are a missed opportunity for companies to get rid of good employees (more layoffs) instead of keeping them on the payroll and keeping them intellectually and professionally stimulated in what ever job assignment they are doing. What he said probably was not meant to come out this way, but as CEO, he should have better oral communication skills. Also, yes, he was having fun at Pebble Beach when hundreds where being laid off in Houston. The 'Chevron Way' is mainly a slogan.

Wasn't Watson the same CEO who was sunking an eagle at a Pebble Beach Golf Open on the same day that 650 loyal Chevron employees lost their jobs in downtown Houston? You see how how these kind of things are not forgotten and leave the wrong impression? Good leaders don't make obvious mistakes like that.

He's talking about the additional people that are STILL employed at chevron even though they have very little work to do. IMO, Chevron did not cut enough.

Do we really need all those expats around the world still? Is there even a reason why GOM and DWEP haven't combined? Why is AMBU still in business? The list goes on... Yes, there are good people in all of those business units, but the people movement and slowly shutting things down will all take time, and those good people need to be stimulated over time.

Makes sense to me...

Well, I'd probably do what he did......but I would treat people with respect by not speaking out of both sides of my mouth and making a quote like. A fundamental tenant of Leadership is treat your people with Honesty, Integrity, and respect.....even if that means you have to make the choice to terminate folks to remain competitive.

Okay genius, if it were your company, how would you balance cash flow, maintain the dividend, and remain competitive?
