Better start searching hiring and firing company is cisco.

I was in cisco for 5.5 years. They say u have to be technical so that it will safe. When it comes to layoff they target only the technical people. I was promoted from G6 to G8 to G10 and got fired.

Its funny no logic. Best you search outside and keep your cv update to date.

Ironic yet sad that Cisco has succumbed to a wave of Indian culture that takes care of itself and ignores others yet people within the company ignore the pink elephant in the room and say nothing. With the lastest LR in August it was not a random act that all of those impacted were non-Indian and 40+ who had managed to earn senior grade levels and contributed to the company's success yet the management team at Cisco who silently manage with culture over performance use cost structure reductions as an excuse for their actions. Shame on them for having few moral and ethical obligations to keep Cisco competitive .... They mistakenly believe quantity trumps quality and more people making less is a successful long term strategy. I guess Cisco's best days are behind them !

Have you asked your manager about the skills and expertise you need to develop to be considered for promotion? Don't WAIT for a promotion, WORK for it. Your manager is your best ally.

Your grade depends on many things, if you don't know how to become G8 or G10, perhaps G6 is the place for you to stay and enjoy. One of the skills to learn is to be more pushy about where you want to go. No one will offer you anything in Cisco without pushing, unless you change your employer. If you do not have a Cisco mentor, get one immediately.

I was a grade 6 for 7 years but got bumped to grade 8 last week. Woohoo! The salary increase was a bit of a joke though. I guess they thought a promotion would be enough to pacify me? They obviously know I'm loyal since I stayed for so long with pitiful pay rises and no promotions.

In MBG, some folks are promoted from G8 to G10 and G8->G10->G11 with 2 years of joining Cisco. Nothing great about those guys other than their "Country of Origin" is same as their bosses. Wink Wink!!

Also depends on the BU - some BU's (you know, the unsexy ones that make all the revenue/profit) are regarded as legacy/sustaining and have acceptable retention rates, so their promotions are constantly on the "back burner" for HR. You also need a mentor who will go into bat for you, and a management layer that knows what value you add - and if that's not happening (like you're re-orged every 18 months) then you won't move quickly/at all. But it seems a bit unusual to be in grade 6 for so long.

You are wasting your time staying in Cisco. Move to other employer you can get G8 or G10.

Promotion is not part of benefits that one is guaranteed to receive. It has to been earned. However, the way to earn it varies from company to company. In Cisco, nepotism and villiagism prevail. The recent promotions I see in my group there are directors to senior directors, and managers to senior managers. All are Indians. Please see the reporting chain in CSG under Ravi Chandra then you understand it. Good luck to your promotion.

G4 is fresher Btech

within 1.5-2 years becamse G6

within 2 yrs became G8

within 2.5 yrs without working became G10

this is our team....Director doesnot care....Sr.Mgr doesnot listen. Mgr promotes to whom he likes.

If u r in G6 for >5 years means u r wasting ur time.

Each BU is different and plays by different rules. The pay ranges for each pay grade (PG) and each job title for each pay grade are different. But generally, PG 4 is for right out of college, PG 6 is 3-5 yrs experience, PG 8 is 5+ yrs experience. PG 10 starts getting into the "manager" roles, although I think Architects are PG 10 and above. I have no idea what PG principle engineers (PE's) are.

I had 5 yrs as a PG 8 at my time of LR. 6 1/2 yrs as a PG 8 isn't unusual, but you'd probably have to get a new job title to get to a PG 10. Most of my co-workers who moved from 8's to 10's all became Architects or Managers.

5 yrs as a grade 6 is a bit much. I'm guessing the OP has peers joining as PG 8's making more than they do.
