It's cheaper to fire people do any companies fire instead of layoff?

It could be worse. You could work for IBM where things have gotten so bad, you get 1 week of severance. SC and MH aren't that bad, yet. But don't give them any ideas!
They DO layoff folks but you should get a package. It used to be 1 month plus 1 week of service but there may be a cap. If you are laid off, you can get unemployment.
Forced vacation use at Christmas shutdown, no longer allowed to work from home (must use vacation time or sick time), brightly lit offices without walls and few amenities, scarce communication about goals or plans for the future from management, constant feelings of hopelessness and fear of layoffs... no, they don't fire people. They make you so unhappy you can't wait to find another job, but sadly there really isn't anywhere else to go these days.
Layoff, they need you to sign paper work and agree you won't sue oracle in future before you get the package
