Thread regarding Cisco Systems Inc. layoffs

How many LR'd people are getting contacted by recruiters for their old jobs?

I am so tired of dealing with LinkedIn requests to add a recruiter to my network so they can talk with me about a position, only to find out that it's a position that needs to be filled on my old team. Cisco wants a less experienced person at a lower wage, but recruiters can't seem to find one and end up contacting me.

Like I'd go back to Cisco for a pay cut AND less/no benefits. Even if Cisco re-hired me by converting me to an employee after 12 months or so, I'd be right back where I started--on the chopping block. HR can't/won't hire you into a position at a lower grade and pay than your previous Cisco position, and if the grade is lower, then you're paid above the median for that grade which makes you too expensive and at the top of the list of people to get cut next round as well as at the bottom of the list for pay increases. Your only hope is to get a promotion to get your pay back to the median for the pay grade if you want to stay.

If Cisco can't fill my position after 90 days of looking, then maybe I wasn't so redundant after all. To bad for them as I've moved on, literally. Took a new job in a new town for more money and more opportunities if it doesn't pan out.

It was posted on Indeed; don't know if it really requires two degrees, but it did require programming skills; check it out also on the company's web site: http://www.e2optics.com/company/careers/

All their openings are low pay.....

@Km6Pax8-5ygw: $19/hour for a job that requires two undergrad degrees, one in Computer Science and another in Math?

That's only $4/hour more than the new minimum wage provided to cashiers at McDonald's.

@Km6Pax8-3zwg: No comment on the current H1 L1 visa scenario (not my experience) but thinking beyond Cisco...Given the fraught political situation in America right now, I think foreign-born workers have unfortunate new risks to consider before applying for worker visas and the like - risks which may result in fewer talented people applying for those visas and those workers not being available. America's recent presidential election has emboldened a certain s-xist, racist, homophobic, xenophobic fringe, and people's physical safety is at risk. I personally know people with tan skin who've been threatened on the street, yelled at to told to "go back to where you came from." Children of color, and non-Christian children (particularly Muslims) are being threatened in their schools. A woman wearing a hijab was attacked at San Jose State.

This is not an attractive face to present to the world. and I fear the resulting brain drain could negatively impact America for generations to come.

"Not that any immigrant or person of color has much incentive to come to America right now."

I am not sure this is true? There are a lot of immigrant workers especially from India in Cisco San Jose. Often in the meetings all the participants are Indians. Only from time to time you see one or two not from India. The contractors are nearly 100% indians and of course they are sent by Indian consulting firms who signed the contract with Cisco executives that are also Indians. You can clearly see the abuse of H1 and L1 visas. Some even come with B1 visitor visa while working as regular engineers. Many don't pay U.S. income tax because they get paid in India (and the pay is very low). The work ethic is bad. The quality has been very poor. Well, if you pay peanuts you get monkeys.

we had not even completed the LR process before the manager was asking about training a contractor to show him the ropes to do the work that we were doing

Ouch. But not surprising.

--> This is why Wall Street and the Tech Giants say that they need more H1B visas so that they can "attract the best talent"

I got offered my position again but as a contractor, thelayoff was right on point. Cisco ELT is working with contracting agencies to ultimately have mostly red badges.

Little off topic, anyone else get swamped by the Indian recruiters that doesn't read your resume and contacting for unrealred toles ? I get multiple calls and emails from Indian recruiters fir 6-12 months contract roles when I clearly stated that I only look for direct hire / permenant roles and don't want to relocate. I even get calls for roles with Cisco when I clearly states my current role is with Cisco. To be fair a non Indian lady from Cisco HR pinged me on linked in as well to see if I am available for a AS role.
