Sad to hear such things. Hope things get better for you going forward. Sounds like you paid your dues and deserve some peace and contentment.

1tut here. The layoff that cost me my house and marriage happened a long time ago. And yes, my loving wife did not want to change her lifestyle or be the primary wage earner in our marriage. She blamed it all on me and my poor decision to work in the oil industry. I have remained single ever since. What happened to me is certainly happening to others who have been laid off at Chevron and other oil industry companies. The whole point is, you cannot predict the future in an inherently unstable industry and nothing will test a marriage like a true full blown financial crisis. Those who mock others who have lost their jobs are pitiful, soulless people. Unfortunately, most of my coworkers at Chevron were conniving, political, unethical, soulless people who would constantly be looking for ways to promote themselves at the expense of putting down someone else. It is called tattle tale playground behavior to managers who support it. There were a minority of people who were a true pleasure to work with. Now time to go and have a bourbon and water.

@4duz, I paid my mortgage off four years ago at 55. Don't worry about me or my wife since we're financially strong enough to retire well. It's because of my present age of 59 that finding a meaning job is difficult, so now I'm looking to take early Social Security at 62 and "get by". You best examine your own situation, as it's people with insensitivities like yours that end up complaining and in a miserable state in life.

I would hope at age 62 your house would be paid for. If not, you were likely living above your means. If that's what it cost to keep the wife, perhaps she left when faced with cutting back lifestyle. If so, a very sad situation. I hope you find a way to get past that sad situation. Best of luck.

I'm sorry to hear of your layoff, 1utu. It's an unfortunate reality in the oil patch. A consolation for you is the help that early Social Security will provide. I'm 59 and have three more years to wait. In the meantime, I will apply and hope for any job I can get to get by. Good luck to you and everyone else.

Why does almost every thread get hijacked by partisan political rants that will not change anyone's mind? I was basically kicked out of Chevron in April when my project was cancelled in June of 2015. I am surprised that my group was kept together for another 9 months. I am 62 and will never again find work in the oil industry due to my age. Fortunately for me, I am able to collect early social security. There are literally thousands of people from Chevron who are still unemployed. I have had that experience in the past. It cost me my home and my marriage. As for me, my future is over, but I truly hope the new year will provide a good job for these people, whether in the oil industry or elsewhere.

If you have a job, you can afford to enjoy a Happy New Year. If you don't have a job, you can't be certain if and when it will be happy.
