When and if the oil depression ever comes back the service companies will not be able to react. Too many people have been purged and the information is now lost not to return.

The crew I am on is too valuable for management to cut any of us. We are the best of the best and are needed for the new tools on order. We are safe from this round this time.

There are plenty of jobs available skills or no skills. The problem is not finding them but the 500 other people that also applied to the same jobs you have applied to. I doubt the HR person goes thru all those resumes.

Highly skilled has different meanings to different people. People who graduated from high school and did lots of on the job training might consider themselves to be highly skilled. People with graduate level college degrees might consider themselves highly skilled. Realistically, who is more replaceable? If you can't easily find a job that pays as much or better, you are highly replaceable. If you can find a position that pays as much or more, then the company would serve itself to pay you to retain your services.
What is use of skilled workers when a training video and checklist will be good enough? This sounds like how industry is evolving.

Remember anyone can be replaced by any Joe off the street. They do not consider skills now in the workplace. Companies will train you to work on their products and will pick the younger and more efficient with less pay. There is no bidding wars in the past years because of the hundreds of applicants. You should just focus on making your boss look good and get your assigned work done. Do not expect any pay increase for the next few years.
The count is going to go higher. I'm a highly skilled employee who's managed to hang on through these layoffs. I'm watching the pickup in the oilfield and carefully planning my move. No raise going on four years...bull&(*^ on that. I'm going to go where I'm appreciated. (I'm not the only one preparing.) Weatherford doesn't understand they can't just pull someone off the street and tell them to do what I'm doing. I have no loyalty whatsoever. I'm going to go out to the highest bidder.
I am at one of the facilities that replaced the older workers. I hate to see people loose their jobs but when you are months from retirement it makes sense. The other side of the coin is the older boss was a lot harder and more structured to work for. The new people in place are easier on us and we have more say into what we can do. We all won with the change that was made.
It also kept the younger employees. At my facility, I was brought in prior to the crash to be trained to take the upper position that would be soon vacated by guys who were close to retirement. Since that bunch of guys founded a small company that Weatherford acquired, they were all about the same age. If they had started retiring all at once, it was going to be a major problem.
The plan is to reduce the pay across the board by 20%. If you were in the top half of your pay scale then you were probably laid off. This reduced the overall pay for the facility. If you have been passed over the past few years and did not receive any raise then you are one of the pefered. You do not squeak so there's no need for grease. Your the perfect example of an employee that will carry the company through.
What facility are they leaving from and what group(s)? This doesn't surprise me since the workload has significantly increased while the pay cuts continue.
