Thread regarding Honeywell International Inc. layoffs

Marketplace medical insurance plans can't be immediately cancelled

If you are out of work and earn the right amount of money, the Marketplace (Obamacare) insurance premiums can be a good deal. But be aware that you have to go back to the Marketplace web site to cancel it. If you cancel it because you will be getting medical insurance through a new employer, the true cancellation date is 14 days after you act and you have to pay 14 days of premiums. No problem if you know about this ahead of time and schedule the cancellation date, but a big problem if you wait like my son did and try to cancel the day your new insurance starts.

Insurance available in Phoenix area is probably worse than COBRA. It will depend on where you are, who you have to insure and how much income you will have in this year.

That's good to know. However, why would anyone continue to pay for the crappy Honeywell health insurance. It is awful. Much better for much cheaper on the health exchange.

Normal insurance premiums cannot be paid tax free with HSA money, but COBRA premiums can be paid tax free with HSA money. See IRS Publication 502. Other insurance also if you are collecting unemployment insurance.

I don't think you can pay premiums with an HSA.

And don't forget to run your cobra payments through your HSA so that you effectively pay with pre-tax $.

Ditto. Cobra definitely cheaper if you don't qualify for Obamacare discounts.
