Thread regarding Chevron Corp. layoffs

How do you extend unemployment benefits?

I was laid off in May 2016. I’ve sent out so many resumes all over the country and had a few interviews but I think my age is hurting me. I'm 45 years old.

My unemployment has run out and I am two weeks away from being homeless. Does anyone know if there Is any way to extend my unemployment benefits? I’ve tried talking to counselors and they haven’t been any help. I’ve sold off everything that I could and now am at the point where I don’t know where to turn. My three kids are hungry and want to know why Daddy is always in a bad mood.

I appreciate any advice or encouragement that anyone can offer. Thanks in advance.

So sorry to hear this. One option could be Uber. They have a $700 sign up bonus. Costco might hire you too?

I'm in a similar situation. Like someone else has mentioned, I have cut every expense possible in a similar manner and now we are living with just the bare essentials. We eat peanut butter sandwiches and eggs everyday. Not to the point of desperation yet. Best of luck to you.

-6tlq, all Chevron laid off personnel got a severance. Minimum 8 weeks pay and a maximum of 52 weeks. That one-time severance payout does not disqualify the ex-employee from receiving Unemployment benefits immediately upon serving their last day on the payroll. The topic at hand is "Extending Unemployment Benefits" past the 6-month maximum the states pay out. They are not being extended past that time frame, but there are ways to save on money by cutting back on your expenses. The severance pay one receives is one thing. Some folks pay off their mortgage if the payoff is big enough. Others payoff bills and balances owed on car loans or credit cards. Some will just save or invest it. So what? It's not your concern.

I'm missing something. Not sure the details but if you got a severence it had to be at or near a years pay, which would mean that technically your "cash flow"won't end for another three months or so, and then you can go on unemployment for six months. Not sure if you ran through the cash, sat back and waited for someone to bale you out or what, but if the answer is any of the above you're probably screwed. The things that many are suggesting, you should have been doing 9 months ago. Want more detail in guidence, give more detail in scenario.

OP, you want some tips on how to extend unemployment benefits? When I was on UI benefits, I extended my benefits doing some common sense things;

1) Stopped eating out at restaurants.

2) Clipping coupons and buying only store brands on sale.

3) Staying home more often.

4) Cutting my Comcast bill by only keeping the internet service and dropping the cable TV channels.

5) Adjusting my thermostat a few degrees and keeping my water heater on "vacation" mode.

6) Going out to food joints with my former work buddies, but letting pick up the entire tab. (They can afford it)

7) Filling up at Fill-a-Sak instead of Chevron stations.

Those are only a few tips you can follow to extend your unemployment benefits. Good luck.

Chevron was the most bizarre company I have ever worked for in my career and an easy place to loose your engineering or other professional skills. I was always told by my bosses to stop doing detailed engineering and get out of the weeds. Bringing a cup of coffee to your boss secured your job vs hard work. I'm so glad I did not listen to them. When I was released, I was marketable unlike many others and able to find a job at the age of 56 making the same salary as CVX. I did not attend a single training course in my 15 years at this company and worked with many children that played video games all day or fantasy football. I am very fortunate to be out of this environment and sorry for those individuals who drank the cool aid and became unmarketable

I wouldn't consider an employee who is 45 years to be too old. But, once you cross the Big 5-0, that's when you begin to skate on thin ice. And if you are over 55, you are a dead man walking.

45 years old is "old"?

Yeah, white need not apply for WIC. Unless of course they are illegals.

I don't think this ex-employee will qualify for WIC assistance. Checkout what WIC is and who qualifies here:

Have you checked into the welfare programs like WIC? I really wish you the best.

@1vbp, I'm sorry to hear of your predicament. I'm sure there are more than a few others who also are out of work and need to tighten their belts. Maybe in one or two years, employment could pick up, but if you are 60 now, waiting that long will only make your chances of getting a good job that more difficult. Your current age and an increasing gap in employment are working against you. It's not your fault, but the way things work. I advise you to simplify your resume. Keep your job titles on the resume, but don't overdo the explanation of your experience and qualifications. You are competing with younger and less experienced candidates who cannot demand the higher pay that you used to get. If you want to improve your chances of getting noticed and hired, you shouldn't try to outshine these youngsters too much, because the employer is looking to find the best candidate for the best price. Good luck.

I was in the same boat as you are. I was laid off in October 2015 and I am 60 years old. I have sent unsolicitated resumes weekly and answered to all advertised production engineering jobs, petroleum engineering, artificial lift jobs, completion and remedial engineering..... Nothing come to getting any job offers. I had 2 interviews and I lowered my salary to 30% than my previous job in Chevron. I knew that there is no extension to the 6 month TWC UI benefits. In order to survive I buy meats at the 50% reduced price corner at Kroger and Randalls. Bread at the reduced price for quick sale rack. I shop for vegetables at 99 cent only store. McDonald and Burger King with coupon are the only restaurant I can afford. I had no cable TV but watch over the air TV (reception). I do not pay for health insurance and dental insurance (exemped from healthcare.gov for low or no income). I know i can get a minimum pay job anywhere but i am not to the point of desparation. I blamed myself for not playing the office politic well (and my age and PSG are also the main factor). Everyday I am living in a deep dark hole and hope in a year or two there will be more hiring. Thousands more are in the same boat as I am......

Get rid of all the H1B visa holders and expats. With so many citizens unemployed, it hardly justifies keeping them.

If you could hold out a little longer, Chevron will be rehiring again based on all the revoked green card holders leaving the country! (Really sorry Chevron has put you in this situation. God bless!)

There's no way to extend your unemployment benefits beyond the 6 months maximum given by the state. You will have to put in 18 months of work in order to qualify for unemployment again. Any extension to unemployment benefits will only come from the Federal government and is provided in bad economic times. Currrntly, there are no unemployment benefits extension given to any state. Sorry. I hope you are able to find a satisfactory job soon. As the previous poster suggested, get any job now and keep looking. Your age being 45 doesn't put you in a bad position to find a good job. Usually after 55, your age will be a factor. Tone down your resume a bit and don't sound "too expensive" to hire. Don't discuss your previous pay at Chevron if asked. Find a way around that question.
