Thread regarding Sears layoffs

Why do you people stay?

I worked as a tools associate back in 2010 while I was in college. It was the most ridiculous work experience I've had to date. I was blown away by the expectations they had for minimum wage employees -- fielding credit, selling maintenance agreements, etc. They would threaten you that your job was at stake if you did not work toward meeting these expectations. I had enough after two months and found a job almost immediately.

Why are you guys putting up with this mess for such little reward? I can understand why Store Managers and District Managers continue to trudge through it (decent salary), but I cannot fathom why someone making minimum wage would stay given the health of the economy. I can think of at least three other thriving retailers who are desperate for employees. You could easily find a better job.

There's only one answer to this. "Because we want to."

I stay because I like helping people.

I stay because at the end of the day I realize there are people out there that still want to come into a store and feel like someone out there will help them make a great buying decision.

A website can't replace what I do. A website is just text on screen.

People stopped ordering from catalogs a very long time ago because they wanted that interaction with someone that knew a little more than they did.

That is what I do.

The expectations may be unrealistic but it feels wonderful when you achieve them.

Seven years ago you felt you couldn't. But i bet you did a few times and it felt good.

Nothing feels better than that smile from a perfect stranger when you have helped them.

That's why a lot of us stay.

A website can't do that.

A better question would be "Why do people keep asking this question over and over and over?" Is someone expecting a different answer than what was already posted?

As crazy as it sounds, I feel like I'd be letting down the people I work with.

I know. I know ...

I stay because my commute is very short and I have family obligations that make it difficult to work very far from home.

I've come to know the store & I feel comfortable there in the sense that I could help you do almost anything there.

Most of my coworkers are decent people & the ones that I don't like as much, I actually like some of the time so I don't have ongoing friction with anyone.

For the most part Sears respects your availability for work. I see that changing now somewhat but you can push back & it's usually honored. See my related 1st reason.

Another retail job in my area isn't going to be great either & will probably pay the same. Maybe it won't have the psychological demoralizion that this one has but I don't know that yet.

Some folks are resistant to change!

People stay because they have so much time invested in Sears,but new people come and go so fast you never even learn their names, usually after they received their first commission pay check and see how little Sears actually pays or how few hours they are going to be working,no wonder the only people hired are high school kids,no adults,unless they are at retirement age will take a job at Sears stores. If corporate every really worked in a store, maybe they would be more realistic on expections.

Why do you start reading a book?

I just enjoy the drinks on the deck of this ship. It's like Margaritaville on the Titanic. With an Iceberg.

Some of us are buzzards looking to pick the carcass clean.

I stay because I want to see how it ends. It's like a train wreck you can see coming--you just can't look away.

7 years later and you're still posting on message boards about Sears. They must've made a real impact on you.

I am looking for other work. Even my husband has told me that that after some of the abusive treatment I have endured by management that I should just quit. If a manager decides to yell at me on the sales floor and won't even let me speak till they are done screaming then I am walking out of Sears.

I've wondered the same thing about hourlies - I stay because they pay me a very good salary, but I'm actively and aggressively looking for something else. I don't understand those salaried folks that are sticking it out hoping for a Layoff and severance package when a BK could be filed in July and nobody would get anything but a kick in the pants and walked out by security..
