Better to move as you got a target at your back.

Drcades ago intel could get away with their low raises as bonus, stock and reputation of innovation, growth, and personal development kept people there.

These days most work like slaves 80 hours a week for 1.5-2% raise and just average industry compensation with possibility that no matter how hard you work you will get cut for no other reason than you are olde or average and topped out. And intel brand and reputation is garbage now.

My new company stock up 40% and my one year RSU grants worth more than the four years of RSU and options were at intel. Then the company values their talent and gives average performers raises like "E" at Intel.

GPTW was so last decade at intel, s---s at intel unless you are in crowd or true superstar, but if you are a star why waste it working for a bozo like BK?

2mmt, For most of the people, it is about being the gladiators to get their 1.5℅ and an SL3.

Performance management is no longer about rewarding people proportionately. It is about managets gaming the system to retain their favorites and for the company to reserve a pool of people with target painted on their back. For the rest of the invisible people, it is a question of swimming long enough, before you hit your first L4 or median age for your grade level. What this means is that there will be no more risk taking, by switching, jobs, managers or assignments or attempting difficult things or things your managers do not understand on the day. I am observing very shortighted planning and execution all around. The losers in the near term are employees. Long term losers are stockholders. And for those in charge, the execs and middle management, it is green and sunny everyday. Anyone planning to be here for long is a captive.

@2icy and @2jcg are correct. And don't assume that Intel management will understand your value vis-a-vis others. The 2015 and 2016 job cuts were full of quality people who received ratings well below what they deserved while others managed to stay and even be promoted -- others who themselves should have been fired years ago. Talent evaluation will always be imperfect, and at Intel it involves fewer checks and balances than ever before -- so

subjectivity and ol' boy networks have greater sway. So don't assume safety -- be prepared!

The basic theme is simple algorithmic way to select the victims for the next layoff

2015: IR and 2 out of last 3 years SL4

2016: IR anyone who had L4 was gone, VSP was a set of criteria about time in grade with no positive.

Writing on the wall is clear. If you aren't moving up intel wants you gone as the company is crumbling and management is desperate to prop up the stock versus do the right thing!

They need to unambiguously be able to select the bottom half of their ranking distribution and cut them all. Won't matter if you are a senior Gr10 doing critical work in an area or the bozo in ICF. If you fit the criteria of the day you are gone. This time with little benefits as BK already said that.

Everyone that is long in grade, stalled in career or the bottom quarter of the distribution is at risk. Yeah even those working 90 hours a week 7 days a week for the last two years could go

Keep an eye out for changing criteria -- they could base things on "X years without a promotion" or "zero increase in your EB multiplier" or "3 straight SL3s" or some new oddball multi year reachback combo of SL4/SL5/IR. First comes the financial results, then comes the FTE reduction targets, and after that they engineer the criteria that will hit their target while minimizing exposure to lawsuits. If a pound of flesh is needed, a pound of flesh they will get. And if 2016 is an indicator, there will be very little time to adjust. That's why Intel people should maintain a never-ending low-burn job search.

@1gfi. Before claiming 'annoyed by the non-fact-based paranoia here', you need to get the facts right first. SSL4 was used as a lay-off criterion for both 2015 and 2016, and BK explicitly mentioned in his webcast in April 2016 that 'SSL4 and SSL5 are always at great risk'.

@1gfi you're in denial. 2015, 2016. And go back and listen to BK's webcast in April 2016.

@1dyx you mean facts as in documenting information on what a manager would do if they want you out? Or documented tasks that are setup to fail? are you that dumb to believe that any manager will self incriminate? You must be a millennial or a denier that can't accept the reality of corporate politics. This is not science and is never black or white.

IR + Successful SSL4/SSL5 will be gone before May comes around. Are you guys really that dellusional to not see what's going on around you? Layoffs will continue to be a fact of life yearly until (and if) Intel is able to reduce dependency on PC business.

"In the old days" - you mean before 2016. There was only one time where SSL4 implied a layoff, and that was last year in ACT when Intel announced 12000 redundancies. Now for some reason, everyone seems to think that SSL4 puts you at risk, only because that happened last year.

That is BS.

If there is no ACT this year, then SSL4 is no problem. It's only a problem if there are more organized layoffs this year.

And no, I am not saying that Intel is a lovely company or that an SSL4 is a great thing. I am just annoyed by the non-fact-based paranoia here.

It all depends on what the performance-based layoff criteria are this time around, and that's always changing. In the old days you could get repeated SSL4's with nothing but the occasional VSP offer and a nagging suspicion that your efforts would be better appreciated elsewhere. In 2016 I think, a single SSL4 on your last focal got you out the door. In other years, there might be factors like a 4 last year and not higher than a 3 in preceding year, etc.

Who knows how all that will play out in the next couple years.

But, it's no secret these days that an SSL 4 means, so your manager made the calculated risk that if their team had to offer up a head to HR for a cut, it would be you.

So, are you happy with that team? With Intel? Maybe it was a fluke and you can work it out. Or maybe it's time to go.

Just don't sit around hoping it will go away.

@dgo And where does your information come from? Just a general feeling, or is there at least one single hard fact there?

@vqx it won't matter whether the grading was justified or not. If they want you out, you'll be out. Open door only works if the next level manager supports you, which means going against his/her staff. good luck with that.

Fully agree with @dgo. It doesn't matter what you document. If management wants you out, they will find many reasons to kick you out. If management wants you to stay, even if you have CoC on your back, they'll find reasons to justify it. Most in Malaysia site knows of a management staff who have CoC cases on his back but close buddy with many corporate VPs and corporate Directors as he's very good at socializing and being drinking buddies with US high level management. CoC cases were closed and the particular staff was promoted to Malaysia IT Director! Go figure!

L4 without IR / L5 is i hint you got a target on your back. Manager didn't document enough to protect Intel from open door but you s--- compared to your peers real or not. Watch the tones of the 1:1s and if emails comback summarizing your 1:1s than documentation for IR is process and you are going to be gone!

@dgo -"...they'll assign you unattainable goals that will set you up to fail."

What??? I'm sure managers would never do that...

GPTW meritocracy and Intel values - I have no doubt HR will make sure all employees are set up to build the future together!

I have no idea why I get in trouble for sarcasm

Do you think it was justified? Did you have any warning throughout the year that he was unhappy iwth your performance? I doubt it would help, but an open door challenge may be the only thing to save you from a layoff. BE's without any warning were almost always overturned if challenged. but no one challenged SSL4 with an S. I would try it now...

@dgo. Totally agree with what you said, except the amount to be purged may be about 5 instead of 10%.

Post ID: @pfp+LSdXN1U

@yzx i disagree. No large reduction will be announced but purging will continue quietly. Bottom of 10% every year is the new normal, and there is still very much a bell curve grading going on. Someone will pad the bottom. Which means OP you are in real danger. Start backing up your files and take your vacations. If anyone goes, you're pretty much first in line. Good luck.

By the way, it won't matter if you document anything with your manager this or any year. If the manager wants you out, they'll spin it whichever way they can, or they'll assign you unattainable goals that will set you up to fail.

In BK's words: this is the new normal.

FLM here. At least the current story is that it doesn't mean anything. As long as there is no ACT this year, you are safe. Push your manager though to give you clear direction on how to get to SSL2 next year. Document those discussions.
