Thread regarding Oracle Corp. layoffs

I will not miss Solaris in the least bit.

I learned to be an SA with Solaris, starting in 1995. Over the years I watched it's decline as Linux matured. I also learned that the open source community was way more valuable as an SA when it came to fixing bugs, getting help, etc.

OpenSolaris did not have the right license and some of it was kept back. It was also released too late. Released earlier and it would have ruled the roost.

The problem with OpenSolaris was that crazy Schwartz guy giving away the software thinking it would spur hardware sales.

Sun didn't know opensource software. They tried opensource Solaris with OpenSolaris and it was a big failure. Whoever ran the OpenSolaris project clearly don't understand how open source community work.

Solaris could have ben what Linux is today but greed killed it. Sun could have open sourced it back in the 90's and it would still be relevant today and Sun wouldn't be part of Oracle. Java would also be in a better place.
