Thread regarding Whole Foods Market Inc. layoffs

Building Out Stores to Not Open

I hear they are now taking new locations that are questionable and building vanilla boxes and not opening them because they are afraid of disappointing sales. Imagine the cost to fit out a store and let it sit idle until sometime in the future when it is less dangerous to open the store if ever- cost of building, rent, insurance- well spent stockholders money- why is there not outrage at this. Oh and the fact that all the stores come in over budget anyway because of egos and poor planning- no accountability to the stock holders at all!!!

New stores are usually budgeted around 8-10 million not 50! Only issue is they are usually about 20% over budget.

It is true about the 365 stores. They have gone to the developers of the centers that were supposed to be full stores and asked if they could be 365 instead. They are being told no, that Whole Foods is an anchor in a center and 365 is not. Developers are holding them to the original deal. That is why they are holding off opening the stores. They want the developers to move on or give in

In case you didn't know, the cost of 'just opening the doors' of a brand-spanking new 40 000 sq ft WFM store is no-lower than $50 million. Also, take into account that the stores are at the most expected to be profitable within 5 years. I have been around a while in the biz! There are many more macro-eco factors that impact on success!

Not a BS rumor. Las Colinas, Tx was due to open this spring, with hiring to start in February. The building is ready. The STL for the store was all but in place. Corporate chose to delay the opening a year, at least, to keep numbers up in other stores. 100% true.
