Thread regarding Intel Corp. layoffs

Not Just Intel. It's All About All Tech. Because modern Tech is more abstract and hands off

Folks:

Please don't ever assume Intel is the only place where there is misery. Far from it.

Ever since I left, I have heard many people with very similar complaints about many other tech companies.

It seems to me that whenever something is tech related, I am seeing more misery.

However, if it's non-tech (cabinet making, steel working, welding, jewelry; just about anything that is 'hands on' I see much less misery and griping.

There is one thing about tech that I did not realize until after I left. Much of modern tech is 'hands off' of the actual hardware. You're shackled to a montor/keyboard/laptop/tablet and program. It could be applications, operating system, or even hardware logic with verilog/vhdl. It's still programming. Then you push your results 'over the fence' and someone does the testing and then gives the results back to you.

With micro-hardware getting smaller (10 nanometers), we are becoming less of a hands-on operation and more of an abstract operation. In a way, we are operating more blind than we were in the past.

I remember days of early tech. We were very much hands on. We were in a lab all the time playing with individual components; test equipment; and actual experimentation.

Right now, I am doing vacuum tube equipment repairs and antique radio restoration. It's very much hands on and I am finding myself enjoying it far more than what I did in the current tech environment. I have also met others who have jumped from modern tech to playing with 'ancient tech' and loving the change.

So, lets not blame Intel or think it's the worst. This is far from the truth. It's just the nature of the beast.

Nice post

Yes seen other colleagues in other companies.

I too find joy in hands on. 3D printing right now as a hobby. Design and print. Or just print.
