Why I quit?
Back then, there was a push to get rid of older associates that were getting paid as much or more than what they wanted to pay store level staff.
My colleagues fit the bill.
None saw Sears past their 60th birthday. One by one, they were subject to massive buyouts, layoffs or firings for violations that in years past would have been a footnote in a personal file.
And at that time, the practice of yanking benefits on the retirees cam into play for the first time.
The handwriting was on the wall.
I sold my stock for a nice profit, parlayed the profit sharing payout into a nice nest egg, and went on to a better job that paid 5 bucks an hour more out of the gate, that I have since retired on.
