Thread regarding Macy's Inc. layoffs

What is the next step?

Now with the changes being implemented, what is the next step for the company? Will there be more layoffs in the coming months?

turn turn turn is right all the way up from the sales associates. what is funny is macys has spent so much money and implemented this training strategy to help retain associates during new hire training? is it working? not in my store. we have so much turn it is crazy. this goes all the way up the ladder. we have seen many SM's come and go. so sad!

Store managers should want to keep the best SMs, afterall they want an easier job too so they can take days off. I'll bet it's going to go down as cost savings and you get what you pay for: $12 an hour sales supervisors who only have the job for 18 months. It's expected that they become Sales Managers at the end of their term. EDPs also have to be placed into Sales Manager jobs after 12 weeks. Turn turn turn is the name of the game. Careers no more!

I totally agree with your comment about salaried managers. I heard they aren't going to have assistant managers and they are cutting some sales managers. This is going to hurt the company. The sm at our store just took vacation and there was just sales managers running. Now when the sm goes on another vacation, these big buildings will be run by kids. That doesn't sound good for the future if the company cutting the ones who are pushing for sales. Forget the 10-12 an hour employee who just shows up.

Can not answer for others, but I do agree there are too many layers of management from DMs to DVP, you have 3 different minds telling you to do 3 different things. DVP wants one thing DM another and VPSM something else. To much. What everyone is concerned about is the cutting of salaried managers and if you work for Macys you know that is what is happening. The store should run with a VPSM and a handful of salaried managers as u stated. What Happens when you package out salaried managers, hire kids at 10-12 an hour call them "captains" and they are running it? You get what you pay for in terms of leadership and if you thought it was bad before, just wait. Macys is cutting from the wrong end if things. Should be looking at DMs and DVPs rather then at your front line managers who are running your stores and doing all they can to keep their associates and customers happy, and have experience in doing it. I wouldn't call any of these people "whiny babies" I would call them frontline managers worried about their stores and who will be running them if they severance all of them.

You guys sound like whiny babies! Welcome to retail people. Macys is so over loaded with managers it's crazy! I work for Macys for a year now and cannot beleive how many people sit in a deep dive... any other retailer has the DM or DDVP (lol or whatever the glorified title is) do all that work. It's time to be an all around business executive and professional. Go look for other jobs because you are not going to find anything different then what Macys is turning into. TJX- one store manager, two to four ASMs to cover the store and that's it from a salaried stand point... Sears- one store manager- a handful of department managers that it for salaried! JCP- store manager and handful of salaried managers.... come on people Macys is finally catching up to the times of how retail business is being conducted and your surprised.... you people need to crawl from under your rocks and see how other businesses are being run and understand no matter where you go it is a struggle and a lot of work... I will repeat.... welcome to retail!

I agree. If you are lucky to get out, do it. As we were told, less people, more work and more responsibility and no more money. The company is not doing well and they need to make these cuts.

How is the my shop going to play into all of this? Our AST was cut. Who is going to do all that work?

Get out while you can!! I believe I am going to be retained, it was frowned upon when I asked to see a new job description of what becomes of the SM role after the changes. Met with a "We do not have access to that information yet" which I knew I would hear. If I am retained I will use the 6 months of time we probably have left before more store closures and cuts after 2nd quarter.... to find employment elsewhere. A majority of people I know said if they are kept they will accept position and be gone within 6 months.

SM2 cannot be lazy if their area gets doubled, but then again the additional SS positions created probably report to them

that is horrible!!

i assume they have a number of SM's they are suppose to have, and will get rid of the weakest. after i assume they give the remaining SM's more departments.

i assume with the roll out of salesforce.com, this will eventually hit HR. also,, where is the my shop rollout?

The sales managers will not hear for another 2 weeks if they have a job or not. Cuts are not complete as far as sales managers. The company did a horrendous job of rolling this out. You have to continue doing your job, but have no idea if you are going to be terminated. Also, they are not telling managers what they are getting assessed on, but sales managers 2 won't be assessed. In my store there is 1 SM2 that is lazy and doesn't care about her job, but she will continue on with the company.
