Thread regarding Sears layoffs

Is my store closing or really getting better?

Went into my local Sears grand to look for a lawnmower part. As I walked around I noticed the following. At 55 years old I was the youngest customer in the store. The refrigerated section was empty and turned off, the grocery section was completely empty and had signs saying they were remodeling. The women's makeup section was completely empty with same signs. The tv section was mostly empty but there was a clerk trying to sell an old guy a tv he could buy a lot cheaper at SAMs. The appliance section was full. I have never seen so many stoves refrigerators and washing machines in one place. Two bored clerks were in this area.the furniture and mattress area had everything spread out with a few things taking up a lot of space. Never could find someone in craftsman mowers but did seed a lot of snow blowers...it don't snow much here...found some cardinals baseball t shirts 30% off and went to check out. The cashier asked for my phone number, why I asked, for your point she said, I have no points I said, let's sign you up she said, why I asked, doesn't look like your going to be open long enough for me to use the points. Here was her reply: This store has never been in the red since it opened, we just had a new manager brought in from Mississippi, and we are going to get a complete remodel. Sears wouldn't do that if we were going to close. So is it a remodel? Or they lying to the employees to get them to stay?

Years ago Woolworths remodeled several of the stores in my area shortly before they closed the whole thing down. Corporations do all sorts of crazy things, and SHC is one of the most dysfunctional organizations in the US.

Also, the employee may have been lying just to get you to sign up for the SYW program. They are under constant pressure for applications.

Just because the store is getting remodeled does not mean it will not close. They closed 4 Kmarts in my area last year and the last Kmart is scheduled to close this April. The closest Kmart to my city will be an hour drive which no one is going to do. 4 of these stores were leased and the one closing in April is company owned. All of the stores had major work right before they closed, repaved parking lots, new roofs, half of their rtu,s replaced, buildings repainted and so on. It is business as usual up until the store closed. I was a QMT and did building maintenance and we had no idea these stores were closing. I lost my job after 38years right before they closed. We still have 3 Sears stores in my area. 2 are company owned and the other is leased. They have not closed any Sears stores in my area yet.

This is an example of one hand not knowing what the other hand is doing or as we call it SHC culture. You have multiple departments, multiple heads, multiple assistants etc all doing there own thing, making up some new idea, some new way to save or transform the company but they don't coordinate with the other departments or even speak to them. So you get one department with some "bright" idea and they spend millions planning, buying, implementing and another department does the opposite or decides to shut it down. That is why you cannot determine what stores will close, what new thing will stick or be eliminated what new product may or may not be in store next month. Too many divisions fighting to stay alive and get a piece of the budget. Big dog wins and everyone loses.

Yeah, why would they do something foolish?

My store announced they were getting a new men's big and tall department. Seems foolish if they are just going to close anyway.

In the last round of closing they closed a store that they had remodeled just last year.

They want the membership info so they can sell it to the highest bidder. Anything for a buck .

My store is a top Kmart store and we received a massive remodel about 1-2 months ago. We even had an official dunk contest event in our store parking lot. A lot of And-1 Players were there. I feel like it's all for nothing......

A Borders associate tried to sell me a membership the week before they went bankrupt. I declined saying I didn't think it was worth it and he argued that they had things turned around and would be staying open. Glad I didn't buy that membership...
