Thread regarding Sears layoffs

Prices in my department rose at Sears this week just in time for any type of buying frenzy because of losing the Associate Discount.

I work in the Fine Jewelry dept and when I check an item's price on the snik or whatever that barely functioning hand held device is, I always check the next weeks price too. Last week I noticed that a bunch of clearance jewelry was going to be more expensive this week than it was last week and I thought that was strange. I also noticed this same trend for a few shirts I was interested in for work. More expensive this week although they are fall/winter items.

I now think that this is due to the anticipation that associates might want to stock up before they lose their discount.

I don't think the new points systems is going to work on any level. SYW doesn't work now with customers, yes, customers always missing points so what makes anyone think this will be any better?

I work in Sears Fine Jewelry and you would be amazed at how many people shop this department. Christmas is crazy of course but business is steady throughout the year. Most of the jewelry is what I consider to be high grade fashion jewelry but the customers don't care. They feel like they're getting a bargain on this stuff.

Mark up on jewlery is at least 1000%. That is why we always have a sale for 70-90% off and still make money.

Who buys jewelry at Kmart, well besides Kmart employees that is?

Alot of people buy jewelry for Valentine's Day. They jack up the price and then advertise a huge holiday sale.

If employee purchases are having a material impact on sales the company is beyond screwed.

Raising prices so you pay more as you try to use your discount before it vanishes. I believe it. Evil. Taking away the discount is evil too. They are going to lose all those life time discount holders who shop at Sears for nostalgia. I cashier during the day and those are quite a few of my customers. Retirees who used to work at Sears and don't really need anything but still come in to buy stuff. Sears was a big employer in my area so there are a lot of them.

I'm with the person who commented just before me: I am DONE buying anything at Sears. I was getting ready to buy a major appliance. With the discount, it's the same price as a local.competitor. Since SHC no longer values me as an employee or a "member," I shall keep my dollars local.

I read it as sale prices were last week. Higher prices now. Maybe because employees might feel pressure to use their discount before it disappears. I'm not buying anything there again though but that's me.
