Thread regarding Chevron Corp. layoffs

SJVBU Announces major restructuring effort - VP email on 1/19/2017 (here we go again)

Summary

  • CVX led effort not BCG led, will follow 12-18 months long CPDEP, currently in early Ph 2, project team and governance announced

  • will focus on organizational and workflow efficiency opportunities and will result in people reduction

  • objective to be competitive in new price environment

My take on it:

  • could have matured to PH 3 prior to announcing it will be a major distraction

  • SJV just went through ESP in 2016 resulting 15% reductions across the board seems like the didn't do a good job

  • suggest to do a better job this time and don't leave any sacred cows yes there are tons of opportunities.

If they want simplify, put construction under FE or Ops. Delete plant supervisors, just use area manager for that role. Take out cbres and the pool car checking in and out.

Wait just a minute, mrip. I did write a short and simple procedure for going to the bathroom and wiping one's arse. I was not remiss in emphasizing the essential task of pulling down one's pants and shorts down before sitting down on the toilet. I also followed through with the proper wiping technique.

Stop adding bs metrics everyday with a damn excel sheet. Simplify damn pmp process, simplify damn execution planning and system completion bs. Keep on preaching simplify but cvx dont know a thing abt simplify. Keep spending money on switching frc company.

We got too many processes, things that are not important to do your key job responsibilities. We preach simplify but dont know a damn thing about being simply. Process is cumbersome and you cant make any decision by yourself so adds more time and complexities. They want quick, cheap, safe.

Layoff all on the project team when study complete. Especially anyone who happens to be a family member of higher up management such as myself.

Lol @kfkn, twice as many HES personnel as employees? You are bold. I think 3 times as many is a sure bet.

Spend some time out in the field before you talk about 1/2 O&M. Do you forget this is what actually makes money? If oil production can be done with 1/2 the operators, it could be done with 90% less non-operations overhead. (I.e staff, FE, etc...)

It is likely that some 'non-core' assets will be sold as part of this. They call it 'Transformation 2020.' Hopefully some of the kingdoms are broken up and not too many new ones are built.

Communication should be better... like sending out the statement the week before Christmas. That was awesome when they did that at the end of 2015.

Oh please, O&M in the SJV don't do much more than survey the field and write permits. We could do what we do now with 1/2 the O&M workforce.

Will this affect O&M again? I don't see how we could get by with any less people

So why didn't SJV deal with this last year when they were supposed to?!? And are the people who were involved in that going to be held accountable (rhetorical question!)?!?

Also, great example in how not to communicate this. "Hey gang, so we're planning some big changes that will take us 12-18 months, and some of you will find this unsettling. Okay, back to work! Oh, and don't let this distract you from staying safe! xoxo Al"

Keep in mind sometimes the hard workers are not qualified to do the job of the slackers. So, someone has to go and the hard worker is just less experienced. Slacker wins. For now.

MCBU went through this a year ago. Staff reductions announced in January for the first quarter. The magnitude of the cuts where not known at the time, but the effect on morale was very noticeable. Some people worked much harder and some slacked off. In the end, it did not make any difference. Around 30-35% staff reduction with many hard workers let go and many slackers keeping their job. It is all politics, payroll and a general crap shoot. I was there and saw it.

It's true, really unfortunate. Just went through the ESP no more than 10 months ago. That was supposed to be the reduction to be competitive in this environment. It's going to be a distraction for sure.

Announcing these efforts, unless they are obvious through BCG, is a rookie mistake. There is absolutely nothing to be gained and lots to be lost in terms of distraction. "Hey everyone, we will fire some of you in a few months. Just so you know. Ok, thanks, back to work!"

I heard Greg Pritchett is leading this effort as the PM, will be interesting... profitability drives business as it should.
