Thread regarding Lowe's Cos. layoffs

15,000 employees in a "transition" period

Store locations:

Lowe's claimed to be reducing it's workforce by 1%, which was the assistant store manager positions that they terminated. However, roughly another 15,000 employees are in what is called a "transition" period. They created new positions called service/support managers. 13-15 prior department managers, per location, were exclusively allowed to interview for these 6 positions. Leaving another 7-9 prior managers in what they call a CSA5 role (12 month transitional role). All department managers not promoted were informed that their jobs will cease to exist at the end of a 12 month period. During these 12 months, prior department managers will be allowed to apply into open positions in the store. Any of which is a demotion with less pay. They hid truth from the media, claiming a 1% reduction in workforce, when really it will be between 6 and 7% after the end of the 12 months. The new service manager positions have assumed the responsibilities of both their superior assistant store managers and their old positions as department managers. Only now they are responsible for zones consisting of 3-4 store departments. We have yet to see any additional employees hired on to fill the voids in departmental coverage created by this restructure. Many stores are struggling every day. Our store's morale is at an all time low.

If you have documentation of you applying for positions in Lowe's over the 12 months and all say no longer being considered not sure how they could stop unemployment. You have proof of trying to find a job. Yet not one given a chance. That is the same as being laid off. I know I have yet to be interviewed for ANY position in which I am over qualified. I really don't expect a real shot at any position other then a CSA so they can take away my pay. It's a very sad time in the company. My store has ZERO morale. The old department heads moving on. Those were the ones with the knowledge. Stores looking messy and part timers just collecting pay checks. So many customers coming up to me saying can you help me this guy I don't think has a clue what hes talking about. Employees asking for help because so many in positions they can't do. It's one big cluster f---.. Good luck to those left. Collect that check. Your job is safe for the next 9.5 months..

I'm not running across this anywhere yet but does anyone know the elidgability for unemployment for the 15,000 transitional employees if Lowe's doesn't find a fitting job for us by the end of the 12 months? Mathematically this saves the company approx $561,600,000/year in savings according to average pay of the DMs throughout the company and this is likely a low ball considering most stores promoted a lot more of their lower paid DMs. Anyways, just wondering about unemployment. Time for me to go back to school so I can spit in my store managers face in the next few years doing a more enjoyable job that pays way better!

I can see where. this company is headed. I was demoted after over 15 years. And I was given an "award" for my area having the number one sales in the store and beating comp and budget. Some of my old customers cant believe that Lowes would do that to there own life and blood. But retail does not care. Yes morale in our store is at a all time low. But cutting payroll is more important. I will do my work for 1 year collect my full salary and maybe go on unemployment for a while. I will not take A 5-7 dollar a hour paycut to do the same crap I do now. This was a purge to get rid of the higher paid people who have been with Lowes the longest. I am sure in time they will regrt this move. But for now its all about saving payroll. And all this bull about hiring for the floor. I know in my store we got a few extra cashiers and maybe a loader or 2. But the funny thing is as these people came on we lost 3 cashiers and 2 loaders who had enough of only being schu for 10-12 hours a week. So we are in the same boat as before. Maybe some of the bigshots in the golden palece need to work a few days in a store. And I am not tlking about the one 5 minutes from the home office, which I am sure is staffed to the hilt. I men one in another state so they can see how there changes really look. I also have seen the service managers and many were my good friends as dept mgrs. Now they are my boss. AND I feel bad for them !! They got very little raise and I make more then they do !!! AND they get to deal with all the b---s--- that happens all day.

Staffing has been cut to a minimum. This weekend in our store, when Millworks activity is normally high with customers coming in to get their orders and installs underway, there was ONE Millworks associate scheduled for all of each day...and on one weekend day, she called in sick.

One associate all day Sunday in Plumbing. One associate all day Sunday in Electrical/Lighting.

On Saturday, from opening (6am) until 10am, there was ONE associate covering Lighting, Electrical, Tools, Hardware, Building Materials and Lumber. HALF the store, ONE associate.

The telephone operator was continually trying to get that one "associate covering (whatever department) to pick up the phone, sometimes three lines at once. Customer Call buttons were ringing like crazy, as you would expect they were not being answered (how can they expect ONE associate to do it all, anyway?). And while the sales floor is understaffed, the "Credit Coordinator" (another do-nothing drone) just walks around the store, tries to drum up Credit Card applications, and joins in the overhead paging for an associate to assist customers.

Betcha Niblock was relaxing and enjoying himself while this was going on.

Meanwhile the new "Service Managers" are foisting the work formerly done by the Department Managers back onto the Departments. The CSAs are being given former Department Manager work. So much for the new Service Managers...just another bunch of drones who still "believe."

After my 12 months I'll go part time. They don't want dependable loyal workers. Just mindless cheap labor.

Loyalty,tenure, experience....Gone!

Latest thing I heard was that the CEO is getting ready to retire (now that he's lined his pockets with blue blood of gone and forgotten employees $$$$$'s) and when he goes they plan to hang the blame around his neck. So there you go....yet another scapegoat!

This type of "restructuring" has been going on at Lowe's - even when Larry Stone was there. I worked there for 20+ years and have been gone roughly 5 years due to one of their restructurings. When I was still in college (before I worked there) one of the students in my class was finishing up his degree at night while working there during the day. What they did to him 30+ years ago, then to me around 5 years ago, and are doing again now is they take the job the employee does and give it a new title. They make everyone reapply and interview to keep their job and if they want you gone -- you're gone. They tried to talk me into taking a demotion & pay cut to keep my job but I refused. I know another employee who accepted the demotion and pay cut and was still let go after just 6 months. I know that it wasn't my re-interview that cost me my job because another employee and I went over the interview questions together and pretty much answered the same way (they provided the interview questions to all employees) yet I was let go. Then again, I had about 10+ years of service on the other employee and probably made approximately 10% more because of my years of service.

"Lowe's Knows" they can get away with doing their employees like that because they always have. Especially when it comes to their offices in Wilkes because the only other large company with jobs is Tyson and most people prefer not to work in chicken guts and feces. I personally think there should be a federal law against this type of thing. Now if the company needs to make some lay offs that's one thing, but to change the title of a job just so they can let a bunch of people go? That should be a crime and Lowe's and any other companies that do this sort of thing should have to pay the unemployment out of the corporate profits as well as be fined by the state and federal government!! Maybe then this sort of thing would stop.

some where on here is a news reporter wanting to interview people laid off. Find that number and call. The media does need to cover how ugly this company is.

So true Lowes doesn't have any morals, values, or vision when it comes to their employees or the company. I mean really...people that have been there for 20 years having to send in resumes and apply for the job they already do.... just to see if they can keep it? What company does this???? I hope to never shop there again as my money will never go to have employees treated in this manner. Went to Home Depot Saturday for my first time and loved it! Bled blue for many years but never again.

To all. Lowes is brutal and cut throat after they cant beat depots earnings and stock price.

I was recently let go after 18 years.

Gave lowes my all.

When Larry Stone left so did Lowes morals and values.

I pray for us all stay strong.

If you still work at Lowe's and one of the ex department managers USE them. Take that salary of yours and wait as long as you can. Don't give them anything back. They don't hesitate to dump you so do everything you can to get paid as much as you can. Do your job the minimum you can and when time comes either find another position you can handle or leave company.. Lowe's is a joke and the customers see it.

Please look out for your self and your families.

Take time to spend with your families and kids. I sacrificed years thinking lowes was more important many long nights overtime and sleepless nights for lowes.

Let go after 13 years. Bled blue and gave it my all.

In the end read a minute long drafted script....no questions answered and stripped of my lowes identity

I feel betrayed

As you should know by now the only thing "big shots" running corporations care about is money. Especially their bonus money. It's way past time for Lowes employees to unite and Unionize. Unionization is the one and ONLY recourse employees at Lowes or any large corporation have. CEO's fear Unions far more than concessions. Make a choice now! Wait to be the next good employee walked out the door or at least look at the union option. It's time for change.

This hiding is done all over. Look at the federal government, How many times they talk about the economy getting better using the unemployment claims as a meter. They said it dropped but what it was people were taking part time jobs just to bring income in so it looked better ten it was. Lowe's is trying to trick the stock holders so they don't bail when earnings are going to s--- compared to Depot yet again. We have always reported earnings the day after depot but this year its a week after. Moral will be low. Because with this transition the store manager picked his favorites not always the best ones. As time goes on more knowledge will go also.. Lowe's doesn't care about experience. They want to drop your salary. Most of the Service Managers in my store are worthless and that will be exposed soon.. The ASM's hate some of the ones the store manager picked and never asked them who they would like. It's the same as always. The kiss asses get ahead but don't do anything.
