What's the rationale behind this? Any hard data? I know the data centers decline could be a blow.

Stealth layoff of IRs + SSL4/5. Similar to 2015.
No announcements have been made. At least large scale layoff announcements that I know of. Last year rumors started early. This is just speculation from all I can tell.
Anyone know something tangible?
last year's layoff was a repeat of the previous year's layoff
they are cutting their top wage earners and replacing with new rcgs
if I were to place a bet, I would bet there will be another layoff this year

No worries. They will hire back h1b, green badge, rcg, and children of former h1b to keep headcount a constant. Layoffs dont mean the company headcount will go down. No need for surviving blue badges to stop .ppt, wfh, luxury travel, drinking parties,and spending all day in required training and meetings.
@qyx - Not fake news, this is 100% confirmed. First layoffs coming in 1-2 months due to AMD taking share in PCs, slow growth in data centers, and 10nm asolute disaster (any real volume delayed to 2018).
