Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

I am amazed by the hate between the wireline and wireless employees. We are all just people trying to support ourselves and our families.

"And for the record. I make over $30 an hour as a non management wireless employee. How would a union get me more money?"

@MCElVHz-ptk

Wireline, associate techs make over $40 in the Northeast.

I was a Unionized wireless worker. From what I've seen from both sides is that most wireless workers are ignorant to how things work and how they're getting screwed. Make no mistake about it 10 years ago wireless workers made big money. Fast forward to 2016/2017 a typical wireless worker has 20 different things he or she has to do at all while working against an unforgiving quota all while making less money than those before them. It's never been more obvious that wireless workers get screwed left and right and what's hard is these younger wireless workers just don't see it. That's where the problem comes from wireline workers have seen what Verizon can do and continues to do and see what the Union can do to help them while wireless workers are ignorant to see what's happening and because they're ignorant to it they don't see the point in Unions. Look at the wireless worker that posted here he blames the Union for his paycheck during the strike rather than blame the company who caused this all to happen to begin with.

@MCElVHz-eny, don't try to use big words unless you know their meaning (and spelling). Lavicious (sic) - or lascivious, even when spelled correctly, still makes no sense. Chuckle.

I smell a divide and conquer post here, to try and create a diversion for the upcoming bloodbath. Let me put it this way, the upper management that is about to lop off heads would much rather have you be mad at the union than mad at them.

I am not a dope. I was in the union (CWA) and got laid off so I don't understand how it's more secure. The only difference was that the company was required to announce any layoffs on specific dates, rather than whenever they felt like it.

People keep saying "we tried to unionize wireless" How exactly? I have been with wireless for over 10 years and have never been approached or reached out to by a union person. How does the union go about "trying to unionize" wireless employees?

Don't be amazed, it has been there since the late 90s/early 00s. We tried unionizing them many times but they were just too smug and thought they were the best, brightest, money makers of the company living off of the resources of wireline since their inception. Now wireless has plateaued, their leadership is in charge, and the layoffs are rolling. The union tried to warn them of this but they thought that $30 a week while getting job security protection and higher wages was just a bad deal for them. Who looks out for the workers? Not corporations, only unions.

ATT pages on this site are also fairly active. The wireless industry is commoditized. There isn't money to be made hand over fist anymore.

Union friendly AT&T laid me off in 2003 so I am not sure that's the answer.

3rd generation union guy here. You have to band together to fight these companies. You think they wanna pay us fair wages? Think they wanna guarantee we wont be laid off? No...they don't! You have to fight for it...not against each other. When the wireless side workers actually understand this, you will be too late. Go apply for job at Union friendly att after life ar vzw

@eny I'm curious to which work stoppage you're referring? I've worked at VZW through multiple strikes.

In any case, as a wireless worker I looked at picketers as a group of people who looked down on me as lesser than them, who set up shop as an angry horde of people literally chasing my customers (and with them, my paycheck) out. Misinformation was intentionally spread leaving customers thinking the people working in wireless stores were not the usual staff they knew, but "scabs" from Anywheretown USA. It was insulting. If they supposedly so badly want Wireless to unionize with them, consider that this is a poorly conceived way to win over our favor. No one approached us to present us with the benefits of being union, all they did was offend us and cause us problems. Why on earth would any of us want to join the union after being treated that way MORE THAN ONCE?!

However I agree, hate breeds hate, it's a sad truth. So maybe problems could be avoided if people could come together with respect, especially in times of disagreement. Unfortunately, pride seems to almost always get in the way.

The most recent strike did cost VZW a ton of money, and I'm sure this contributed to the loss of ES/OS. But more concerning is the lack of in store traffic coupled with VZW effectively limiting their revenue with Unlimited. I suspect this new plan didn't bring the customers back in droves as was expected. Too many people left for other carriers' conveniently impossible to get out of switcher offers (thanks, trade-ins) and probably realized other networks aren't all that bad, so why go through the hassle of switching back.

Many seem to enjoy placing blame on over compensated and under performing executives, but I genuinely want to know - What are actionable steps to correct this? Do they need to be fired and replaced with a lower paid version of themselves? Can a shareholder lodge a complaint about lacking performance? Is there actually a procedure in place for an exec to miss out on compensation (voluntarily or otherwise) in order to reinvest those funds into the business, and perhaps prevent a layoff?

@vym - I'm sure the strike cost Verizon less $$$ than the excessive executive compensation packages paid to Lowell and his cronies. And they s--- at what they do to boot.

So lay off the union for causing layoffs. It's the greedy, under-performing, over-compensated execs that are the cause of your pain.

I know I will get backlash for saying this, but, I think that a lot of the 2015 Rifs (November particulary) were necessary to pay for the strike. At least the strike was part of the reason Verizon had to cut costs...

Started during the work stoppage. Wireline picketers were looked at like grandpas and grandma's by the younger non-union workers, and the wireless folks took the striking personally against them. Now the wireless side is dying and the wireline folks are berating the younger workers losing their jobs. Hate breeds hate, and sad as it is both sides are guilty of the lavicious behavior.
