Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

I think the real issue and feelings that the OP is trying to communicate are that the VZ "team" and "family" mentality is a one way street. Remember our kickoffs and the cheering and team environment that was being asked of us (required). The reality is that working for this company is just a "job" it is month to month employment. There are no longer any guarantees of a long term career regardless of your talent or ability. The op's mother probably felt that VZ cared for her as much as she did them. Reality is brutal sometimes. However I have been here long enough to see Karma at work. Those that think they are immune and above the VZ grim reaper usually end up puking the kool aid when they get their walking papers at a later date.

She will be okay. She learned lots of good quality at VZW. She can use those in new job. Plus she has almost a year salary to collect - and you never know she may get a job next month. And stash the packet. I am sure she has her 401K matched for 19 years. She is 55. Let's assume she get a job in 3 month and stash 75% of her packet- she will have great saving with awesome 401K.

Saddened to read the news, however, she does have choices. True she has the opportunity to apply for other available opportunities like being a Sol Specialist but given her tenure. Her severance will cover her over 8 months including health care. Verizon is a top company to work for and I'm damn sure many companies relish to hire these highly trained ex employees. Verizon did not just fire and give no severance or placement assistance. In fact, they gave better than most severance packages. I know this as fact. My friend was let go from his company and his pension was gone poof, sorry company cannot afford it. Verizon matched 401 k of 6% invested so be thankful not a pension to be stolen like my friend. Your Mom is highly trained and will be sought after so have her enroll in job placement support. She will be surprised what is awaiting her next decade. Don't hate Verizon.. they were good to you and your Mom for 19 years..Nothing is guaranteed... Give Mom a hug.. Tell her, there's a job waiting for her!! But first, take two weeks of vacation and enjoy friends and family!! When my time comes, thats my plan!!

Good Lord. Verizon is a business, not a philanthropy. Layoffs happen all companies, the only difference is that VZ pays lots of money in severance and medical benefits to the people they layoff.

OP, I'm sorry about your mother but your anger is misplaced. If she got laid off at T-MOBILE, Sprint, or most other companies her severance would be less than half what your mom is getting and without any medical coverage.

Severance or not- it doesn't compensate for the hard work or appreciation devoted. I appreciate your moms 19 years of service to Verizon. It's sickening to see that such a profitable company will do. They talk about the credo and integrity but they aren't running it as though.

she's getting a fat severance if she was with the company for that long.

think about that when you cancel your service.
