Thread regarding Sears layoffs

First time in Sears in a year

I walked through a Sears store for the first time in a year.

  • Massive amount of exercise equipment on display.

  • Close to 1/3 of the first floor was mattress displays. More floor space devoted to mattresses than mattress-only retailers. I'd say 1/2 the first floor was mattresses and exercise equipment.

  • Tools were a sad, sad shell of the "good old days" Display walls have cheap cardboard signage covering up half the vertical space that used to be full of tools. Very, very few large power tools left. I'd say 1/2 the handheld power tool displays were empty. In hand tools, only the basics one can get anywhere are left. I think my Ace carries all the Craftsman hand tools this Sears had, not that I'd buy them there either as everything is made in China junk.

  • I was one of only 3 or 4 "customers" I saw.

  • Appliance area has clearly been shrunk down. Stuff was spread out. Vacuum cleaners there's a whole 4' shelf per model, at least of the display. There isn't much in the way of boxes underneath. Electronics are totally gone, replaced by an As Seen on TV section.

  • Clothing areas, the racks were really spread out. At first glance it looked OK, but then you realized you've never seen aisles between he racks this wide and the racks have things spread out on them as well. There's exercise equipment taking up floor space near the exercise clothing. For that impulse buy I guess.

Probably saw 5 or 6 employees hanging out. Not really anything for them to do. No on was really shopping, they were either using it to cut through to the mall or just milling around like me from what I saw.

Yep. I went into the store by my office last week and noticed the same things. Mattresses were moved to 2nd floor and took up 3x the space as before. Appliances were shrunken down and electronics was almost non existent.
