Thread regarding Whole Foods Market Inc. layoffs

Stock Price

What's going on with the stock price- could it be a behind the scenes play for the company???? Certainly isn't anything the washed out leadership is doing...................

@1nuk: No, the problem is not with people smoking weed "on their free time." And the choice you've offered -- between drug testing and no alcohol testing whatsoever -- that's a false choice. Total BS. We don't need to test for weed. We need to test for meth, coke, heroin, alcohol, acid etc. We need pre-employment, post-incident and random drug AND alcohol testing just like every other business in America. Otherwise, we become a magnet for drug addicts and drunks. And the testing needs to go ALL THE WAY TO THE TOP. Especially at regional, where let's just say some investigation and testing are sorely needed. Pot is legal in many places and can easily be excluded. But by the same token if you're high ask a kite on some sticky tree buds, I don't want to be anywhere near you if you're on a forklift. Yeah, get a good buzz on during your time off, but don't be bonging out and endangering everyone's safety and sanitation by forgetting whether you added cleaner to the spray bottles or shifting into reverse and running my a** over.

John Mackey is probably too busy for trivial things like this. He has a crazy schedule full of vegan food conferences, appearing at book signings, hanging out with Rip Esselstyn, and performing at bros-only drum circles.

Mmmm...i agree with post here regarding to Jana walking away. 8.5% of ownership isn't much to make the changes they want. Maybe if they can get the Vangaurd group, the largest shareholder, on board, an accelerated sale or coalition of other stock holders to rally together will occur. Read an article of something similar happening in 09. Good Luck!

"Maybe Jana can make can make wfm a drug free work place."

So you have a problem with people smoking weed on their free time but TL's who come in hungover every day are still fine?

This has happened so many times over the past year, whether it be kroger buying the company or publix. Every time we are in for a bad quarter some rumor or drastic measure happen a to soften the blow. The year ending after the rare mis hap was layoffs. After that it was the 365 failed format. Then the buy out rumors start. Don't believe the hype. This company will fail under its own weight.

Does these higher-end management vote one another on or off like Survivor too? I am surprised this is even still a process. I bet the world would be very surprised to hear that team members vote each other on or off their teams like a reality show. Because that really works.

stock is up 20% in 5 days, the first 10% was what i call the friends and family plan. everyone in the "know" buys in advance of the news while retail investors scratch their head saying, "but, but I just read an article saying they lost 14 million customers"...lol...big wall street game and you ain't in it. My 2400 shares I've accumulated over the past 6 years are only down 13,000 now. Go whole foods!

It's a very public play for the company. Takeover hedge fund Jana Partners has announced it now owns 10% of the company and is preparing an alternative slate of candidates for the Board of Directors as well as seeking new management. Jana also wants current management to take steps to cure its chronic underperformance. It wants the turnaround process sped up and also wants the company to pursue a buyer more aggressively because it sees "value" in the shares not recognized by the market. Well OF COURSE it does. They're talking their position. As soon as it becomes apparent that management is not going to give in to these outsiders and that the issues are SO MUCH BIGGER and STICKIER than they imagined, the shares will resume their inexorable slide. If this were easy to do it would have been done already, but unless Jana has access to a time machine and is prepared to de-program the delusional Wackey Mackey and his kiss-a-- board, nothing is going to be different just because some big shot has bought a bunch of stock on the cheap. The company may well be sold but if it is, I believe it will be a take-UNDER not a takeover. Nobody wants or needs a bunch of rented grocery stores that are poorly integrated, unprofessionally managed and are losing business fast. I wouldn't be surprise if Jana ultimately is denied what they want and just gives up and walks away. If this had any chance of success the shares would be up maybe 30% or 40%. It's just another mirage. Walk away.
