Thread regarding Wal-Mart Stores Inc. layoffs

Walmart's 18,000 Positions Eliminated Since Last Year

The source is below. 18K is massive, I don't think any other company had cuts of this magnitude, on the other hand, we do employ more than others... This is going to be a brutal year for all of us, let's hope that those who survive will have a chance to work in a more stable environment. God Bless!

In total, Wal-Mart has eliminated roughly 18,000 jobs since early last year, Hargrove confirmed. However, many of the affected employees have been reassigned, he said.

Roughly 6,000 of the 7,000 employees who had their back-office positions eliminated were reassigned, Hargrove said. "Well over" 50 percent of the 10,000 of the store employees who lost their jobs due to last year's store closures were also retained, Hargrove said. And the company will hire 10,000 workers through new store openings, he said.

The Wal-Mart news comes just a few days after a disappointing jobs report that was hurt by retail layoffs. Nearly 30,000 retail workers lost their jobs in March, leading to the worst two months for the industry's job creation since December 2009.

Still a big number. And I doubt it's over. The whole retail industry is laying off workers right now.

If you do the math provided in the article, over 11,000 of those people weren't fired, just relocated. The positions were eliminated, but the people were retained. So that means that no more than 7,000 of those 18,000 actually lost their jobs. Still a significant number, but nowhere near 18,000 people unemployed.
