Thread regarding AIG (American Intl Group Inc.) layoffs

There are so many layers of upper management at AIG

I was laid off a year and a half ago.

Morale was terrible then. It was a horrible last few years. I stuck around for the severance (as most people do). I am glad I am no longer associated with that miserable place.

There are so many layers of upper management making large salaries telling their managers what they want to hear.

I believe the company is mortally wounded.

A shell if its former self...

Trading and critical financial systems went down for almost a day last week! When you lay off the ppl who built & manage them, poorly manage the remainder until they leave on their own, run a rudderless IT shop, and have remote-working senior managers (from all over God's green earth)deciding who stays or goes, who is left to keep the sinking ship afloat? Does anyone even care or are we all just waiting for the breakup?

Massive layoffs have been the pan to cut expenses from day one. They heavily invested in IT to fix the crappy company system so they can layoff operating staff next. Unfortunately the closer you get to making that system work, the more IT people will be paid off and then they will turn to operating staff next.

There are literally hundreds of additional layoffs coming this year. Bottom line you cannot cut $3billion of expenses without Rifs and shuttering offices. You are not going to shrink yourself to the top, get out while you can.

People are requesting to be placed on the RIF list in IT because it has become such a horrible place to work.

It's getting worse. Right now it is an endless succession of layoffs but without any apparent range for job numbers, locations or function. As soon as one set of people go, the cycle starts for the next set of layoffs. Nobody ever knows if they are in the firing line or when the firing will stop. There are no notifications of schedules for the layoffs so people come to work not knowing if it is their last day.
