Thread regarding Chevron Corp. layoffs

1H 2017 PDC Results

So just found out, I went 0-4 in this past PDC. Still have my job as it was posted contingent but really, really frustrated and stuck now. Career development at this company has come almost to a complete stop unless you are one of the "special people" that CVX loves to fawn over. Tired of beating my head against the wall with this company. Might be time to go find something new.

I was talking to a couple of HR contacts and this appears to be a silent ROM / PDC for many people. Not really announced but a lot of people are being shown the door after this PDC is over.

@7gwa are you replying to a post on this thread or are you just a troll? Your post references nothing and looks like gibberish. We are sorry if you have been laid off 4 times, but for some that's nothing and they pick up and move on. Good luck.

Thanks, 7tta. Yes, I do toot my own horn (a bit), that's because no one else will for me. I make it a practice to give credit where credit is due, but if I sit around and wait for it to come my way when it should, well, I'll make sure I receive the recognition I'm due. Of course, all in a professional and respectful manner. I don't see too much recognition being given to productive contractors working for Chevron. That's a pity.

-3ebw, I am a Chevron consultant and have over 42 years experience. I agree with some of what you say but not all. Many in the Chevron full time staff are amply qualified and equal or excel any of the consultants that are contracted and generally possess more knowledge and experience. The decision to hire outside contractors/consultants is primarily a business/financial one. It seems that you just like to toot your own horn a bit. Please "keep it real" as the young folks say, which is obvious that you are.

7rnn, With you it's apparently a "fourth time" that's a charm. Unbelievable.

@MTtSHFa-5oim your story sounds just like mine but trust me Chevron will eventually crash you, trust me and remember my words. Been there done that. I still refuse to be Chevronized but they crashed me alright. Just performance by itself is not good enough. You need to attend brown nosing classes and all the other sh--e that works for Chevron.

But hey good luck mate and more power to you if still works after 10 years :-)

Good attitude -5hjf. If only Chevron and its management would give a crap.

Work you butt off and best the best person in your department without a doubt, make it so its not even a question who is the most capable person on the team. Work harder, longer and smarter than everyone else. Make your supervisor's job a breeze. Be motivated, thorough and effective. Work's for me. Consistent 2 plus or 1 reviews. Crush your job responsibilites with detailed excellence in everything you do. If you can't do that, you have room to grow in your present position. If you put in a 35 hour week, well just remember others are striving to stand out above the crowd and working to get promoted. I came in as an experienced hire and in my 4 years with the company I have received a total of 34% in raises, one PSG bump and already at 102% CO for that second psg. It's possible to climb higher but there is a cost, and you have to pay the price to succeed. Focus your energies and forget anyone who doubts your ability to achieve more. Onward and upward go those who do their absolute best. Do your job and half of your bosses job and see what happens. I came from nothing and can tell you; you write your own ticket in this world; with your thoughts, actions, beliefs and work ethic. The average person simply won't pay the dues necessary to clearly outperform others in their department. Pessimists abound, f'em, move on with your goals and get yours the old fashioned way; Earn It!

5xcw, Most contractors are specialized professionals with many years of experience. That's why companies hire them. Just because the contractor you naively insult who says he has worked 6 years with Chevron, doesn't mean he has only 6 years of professional experience. I was let go in the August 2016 layoffs at the age of 59. I'm too old to be hired as an employee anywhere else, but am currently contracted on a year by year basis with a leading energy company. So the next time you chip into a conversation about contractors, first have an idea of what you are opinining about. Speak from experience.

For me, ajob is a job, 4mup. I work where it pays me best. Maybe you're a young novice or think you are well set in your job. But don't anything for granted. That job can be taking away tomorrow morning and I'll tell you from experience that the grass is not necessarily greener on the other side. I'm a professional and like to work with like minded professionals. Unfortunately, Chevron doesn't hire nothing but... It also has its dummies and slackers, just like elsewhere. So, reshift your naive attitude, son.

2hvs, I'm a Chevron consultant and have been around for over 6 years. I can assure you that most consultants are very well qualified. It's both the project managers and their management who don't know exactly what they want or need. Scope of work is seldom clear or changes at the drop of a hat. It's a continual "back to the drawing board" all the time. Anytime the contractor wants to "help", he's told to follow orders. Like I said, it's not unqualified contractors. It's more like unqualified Chevron employees and management. After all, Chevron called us, not the other way around.

Gotta love the contractors we still have, oh and the many unqualified consultants with network champions making $$$. Can't believe this stuff is still around post massive layoffs at 50 dollar oil.

Industry is still in deep depression. You cant expect company to develop you and help go places. Be happy you have a job. Better than being out in the cold. Ya, those expats with cushy lives abroad should be brought back.

JW said layoffs are behind us. All of those silly high school level company slogans are quite disgusting considering the behavior towards employees. Maybe that is what The Chevron Way really means. The joke is on you.

@zgy - Regular employees also deserve a place at the home office. They had the job first and do a good job supporting the company. If the company wants to make room for expats for a while before redeploying them, then fine, but not at the expense of lowdown tactics like laying off loyal workers and replacing them later on if necessary. All this does is lower morale and create distrust in management. That's a sure recipe for failure.

Expats deserve a place at the home office once in a while to relax and put their feet up after busting their humps overseas. Casual dress. Long lunches. Friday's off! I've never seen anything like it.

The company will bring back expats and give them the jobs of hard working and loyal employees. They will hold these positions as "placeholder jobs" until they eventually get redeployed overseas. If the domestic job needs to be backfilled, it will be done with a new hire or lucky PDC contestant on The Price is Right. OP - In this environment, be happy with keeping your current job. Not having one is a real b!tch.

OP here. Yes I am supremely blessed. I know this. This was actually my 2nd straight PDC being shut out and each time I have made the "short list" for multiple jobs but too many Must Move expats coming back that are taking the jobs. System is totally constipated and a mess.

@gii - Way too many people at Chevron - maybe so. But "get over it"? Screw you. Why don't you volunteer to leave? The rest of us are trying to both survive in our jobs and vying for a chance to advance our careers in the PDC process. You seem to not give a crap or is it you have a guaranteed lock on a great job. What a d!ck you are.

@mam, You hit on the crux of the problem about the PDC. The PDR's lack of sufficient knowledge of the applicants is the nerve center of the entire problem. I've long been convinced the PDC process in Chevron is only a "buffer" to protect itself against, and to circumvent the intent of labor laws. It's only a countermeasure established to bypass procedures in the law and for the company to do as it wants.

I understand the OPs perspective. In fact, no one should feel stuck in their career including inside of Chevron. Pursue your goals and if it doesnt fit Chevron then move on. Chevron has plenty of growth opportunity and the PDC needs to connect the best people in the right Jobs. I dont know how the PDC does this with the lack of information on the employees

If you are under 30, carefully research your options and move on. Chevron is in a death cycle just like the EPC companies in 1985. It might get better for a while but its a downhill roller coaster ride in the long term.

OP, Do you really feel that frustrated for being stuck in your job after going 0-4 in this latest PDC? You are one ungrateful piece of work, you know? Count your blessings that YOU still have a job, for there are others who are losing theirs and NOT finding any job out there in the cold. Some people really astonish me when they reveal how self-centered they are. The OP is one of these people.
