Thread regarding Intel Corp. layoffs

Common Thread -> Andy Bryant

Intel is on its third generation of struggling CEO's and missed strategy opportunities. The common thread and co-contributor to these failures is former CFO, former COO and now chairman of the board, Andy Bryant. Whether viewed as 2nd in command or key strategic advisor to Barrett, Otellini and now BK, Mr. Bryant must be as much at fault.

Now it seems he continues to flex his poor influence. When it is determined an outside CFO is preferred, let's move the incumbent administrator (Mr Bryant's selected successor) to become "psuedo COO." Stacy Smith will not bring excellence back to Sales, Manufacturing or Operations! We want to overhaul our broken management and focal practices. So let's give HR to another Mr Bryant Finance confidant. New ideas are not likely to come from a 65 year old, 40 year Intel employee Finance manager.

Mr Bryant is setting the stage for a fourth failed generation of failures. Too bad BOD won't do something - also mostly picked by/with him.

CRB ... he took a potshot on some video spot too at Otellini. And dumb under-educated American workers too.

In the last twenty years, other than Splinter and Maloney, Sales has had a long line of uninspiring leaders. As personable as Smith may be, putting a finance guy in charge of Sales isn't going to end well.

To cut loose and harvest the value of x86 and server they must cut TMG boat anchor loose. The 10nm will for certain hasten the need

Stacy Smith run a foundry will resul lt in huge cuts in TMG can't wait to see that ACT.

Highly unlikely TSMC would touch the poisonous cultural in TMG. I could see Samsung sniff around and make a bad investment.

@-2qbk is spot on. No other path than to split. But foundry will merge with TSMC (vs be standalone). Stacey won't be CEO. (Reall AMD merged with UMC - too hard without that culture).

No one knows the economics of the semiconductor industry better than Andy Bryant. He is perfect for Chairman, as every decision the Chairman makes is an investment decision.

As for Stacey Smith taking over S&M and TMG, and bringing in an outside CFO, ... this is obviously preparation to split Intel into 2 companies. The design & product side of Intel will be split from the R&D and manufacturing side. Stacey Smith will be the CEO of the new foundry company. Look for it in 2018 or 2019.

re: Barrett - during his speech about Grove, CRB was ruminating about Intel history, and apparently he looked over at Bryant and half-jokingly said something like 'don't screw it up, Andy'.

Re:

Didn't Barrett take a not-so-subtle shot at Bryant at the Andy Grove memorial?

Please explain...

They'll just ask the Bain staff to put some presentations together to explore new business models and strategies for Intel.

You know, like Noyce, Moore and Grove did...

Hit the nail on the head that all three CEOs since Andy have been mediocre, bad, and now terrible and all three hold one thing in common. Yes Andy B not the original Andy is no Einstein but just your average Andy who was right time right place and is now pivotal in as one of the reasona Intel is in the mess it is.

BoD needs to make a move but who on it has leadership, vision and influence? Sadly none so Titanic continues to take water. It is surely going to sink. So the only question are you off on a lifeboat or going to die in the cold freezing unemployment higher tech abyss!

All good points.

Didn't Barrett take a not-so-subtle shot at Bryant at the Andy Grove memorial?
