Thread regarding Oracle Corp. layoffs

It all started with Oracle Labs

When Oracle Labs was shutdown we (in the HW group) were told that it wouldn't happen to us.

Then BAM! 30% laid off in HW group.

To quote MH (I heard him say this in person and as best as I can recall):

"I'm not sure why we need the HW group when we can pick a Intel part off the shelf and plug it in."

Any comment HR?

Oracle Labs was shut down? Is that true?

AFAIK, this company doesn't innovate in HW. I'm talking IBM Intel class innovation. I'm talking using Einstein-Bose condensate or DNA for storage, or biological or quantum methods for computing. I'm not talking tweaking a von Newmann processor that you acquired. Their contribution was an RDBMS, and it was best in show for quite a while. This company is in the same position as the railroads were in 1925 or so. If it focuses on its core competency and service, which is unlikely, it might be sustainable. We know how to make commodity HW, and this company isn't a player. We know how to innovate HW, and this company isn't a player. Owning some clouds is a good idea. Selling them, not so good. Don't get me started on the evanescence of clouds!
