Thread regarding Cisco Systems Inc. layoffs

$4B of acquisitions and still no cloud story

http://www.marketwatch.com/story/oracle-continues-to-hammer-at-amazon-in-the-cloud-2017-03-15

So Oracle continues to invest in and reap the benefits of their cloud pursuit. Meanwhile, we still struggle to figure out what we want to do. Sorry, MPLS isn't coming back.

Cisco has spent atleast $4B on cloud-related acquisitions. Listening/watching to recent town halls, we've still got no idea what we're doing or going to sell.

Cliqr: $260m

AppDynamics: $3.7B

Why? Oracle at its' core is a software company. We're still a box shipping company. Chuck's first major hire was Biri, (where is he now?). Where's the accountability for that? If I hired someone like that and they didn't deliver my management would fire me on the spot. Luckily for Chuck he is above accountability.

@4qbb I don't think Cisco can.

Best it can do now is shift to be a 'best in class' box shifter. As things like Azure Stack continue to make the hardware comodity Cisco will become less and less relevant in this massive area and burn through $70bn in the bank with failed ventures, stadium sponsorship and eventually die.

This will take years. It's a shame - a bit of execution and it could have been good!

How does Cisco think it's going to compete against AzureStack (on prem private cloud) or AWS+Vmware? Metapod isn't growing and layoffs are continuing.

Last year the stated cloud goal at Cisco was to beat AWS and Azure whilst fighting Red Hat and stabbing Pivotal in the back.

It failed.

This year it was to beat Google's Kubernetes, Docker and Mesos.

It's failed.

Next year is no doubt to just drop it all and acknowledge Cisco can't do cloud.

Oracle story is bull. If you have a subs driven product, and offered a relatively modest increase to make it fully hosted, you jump at it. Oracle are losing thier market share in the DB space so it's a net win for them.

Can't compare to Cisco. Cisco lost thier private Cloud lead - having a big chunk of DC spend - about 4 years ago, when they fouled up the nicera deal and invested in aci. Aci losers continue to fail to offer a decent cloud connector, letting even MSFT out play them there. Intercloud/Cloud infraservices was a good idea, but management completely unable to comprehend the scale of investment in software, or realise how f%$@Ed our SP partners would be in getting a slice of the action.

Cisco's strategy is to cross its fingers and create FUD around cloud providers. I remember our EMEA Leader standing up at a a customer event and stating that AWS was a risk because if interest rate rose, they could go bankrupt. It was embarissing to say the least. First AWS is supported by the biggest retailer in the world. Secondly if AWS ever looked in trouble every man and his dog, including Cisco, would be begging to buy them out. The old Cisco never had to rubbish the competition and it's a sign they are losing. For me Cisco lost the cloud battle about 8years ago when it hesitated. Now the barriers to entry, even Cisco with its $60bn in the bank, can't enter the game. All it can do now is offer auxiliary products to cloud solutions which AWS or Microsoft haven't built yet but will do very shortly. Cisco is nuts to try to compete in a software world when they don't have the vision or structure to do so effectively. They will get destroyed by MS, VMWare, AWS, BMC and the like and will see all the shiny acquisitions turn in to nothing.
