Thread regarding Intel Corp. layoffs

Base pay question

Numbers are random but situation is real. Let's assume, base salary = $117k. Base salary Range on HR documents for your grade level = $100k to $160k with $130k being 50th percentile. SMA triggers when base falls below 25th percentile. Once SMA triggers, they automatically get your base increased to 50th percentile. Situation is they keep giving stupid 3% raise for 2 consecutive years. Base moves up but so does the entire range. How the hell to get out of this situation while base is intentionally being kept just slightly above 25th percentile so that SMA won't trigger. Options are 1- Talk to HR and tell them SMA tool is dumb and needs fixing. 2- file ODI for EE or O 3- ask for 0% raise. 4- find a new job. Any suggestions?

Reqs are not frozen, they are open and plenty of people interviewing around here.

Actually #4 is actually the best in this environment. It is not official, but they actually mark your time in grade and job, so shifting periodically helps avoid the curve/trap you outlined above. Finance people shift every 18-24 months, if you notice. And most of the top PEs also shift their focus or even groups on a regular basis. HR is powerless to change the rules, whining to them is worthless. But if you have another manager interested in you, that creates your value. Do it, go look.

BTW, there are always still great managers and teams scattered around. Just start talking. Your manager is looking for himself you know, always informally of course! So, why shouldn't you? Build your network of contacts.

Unfortunately, you are too late to shift for this year. You should have done it back in January or even December. Probably all Reqs are frozen right now till the next layoffs are over. And if you are targeted for ISP, you cannot shift. I had a great new spot all lined up, but even that group got axed after I was walked. Moral? Surf, baby.

Why don't people just look for new jobs and see how much they are worth?

Range for grade level isn't the same as range for job role. Software engineer is going to make a lot more than a HR analyst for the same grade and experience.
