Thread regarding Intel Corp. layoffs

It is no understatement to say that all Iengineers spend a good 40% of their time in meetings where they do not solve real technical problems...

"the more inward and much harder and more painful physical things intel must fix"

_The inward gaze points one epidemic across Intel. The amount of overhead engineers spend in following mind numbing processes, approval chains and decision matrix-es. It is no understatement to say that all engineers spend a good 40% of their time in meetings where they do not solve real technical problems, but convince some clueless manager, program manager or a planner on why solving a specific technical problem deserves their approval. Those who are in charge of leading the ship have created a massive middle management layer in order to control the masses and make them accountable on a daily basis. When people are directly accountable to their managers, you wonder what value is added by four other matrix managers. If it takes so many matrix-ed managers to manage engineers' time, how eficient is the process. In smaller companies, engineers talk to each other directly to resolve issues..At Intel, it will have to first go through a committee before even it gets a hearing. Then 10 other deemed stakeholders spend 4 meetings to approve that engineer will spend two hours to fix the issue, bug, feature or whatever. Is it any surprise that innovation and execution at Intel are the envy of glaciers. Intel works slower than all big governments.

How do you expect Bain and Gartner ever to understand this culture of nano management, caps and controls at Intel?_

Absolutely to the point - I was part of a startup bought by Intel and I could witness the absorbtion and transformation of an engineering-oriented, fast and innovative company in the buerocratic monster that is Intel. I could not believe it at the beginning, I was assuming that Intel is a top-notch engineering company with top-notch management, I was assuming only my manager is a power-obsessed, toxic individual, with no skills whatsoever, besides b---s--- bingo.

It slowly became clear exactly what the PA stated - this was the system. The whole mid-layer is built like this, and the amount of overhead caused by this huge number of useless, technically incompentent, power-obsessed mid managers suffocates all creativity and energy of the "working class".

Endless stupid meetings, plain INTERDICTION from management to talk with other teams directly, tousands of emails whose only purpose was to be eventually mentioned in focal, nobody taking the simplest decision without a meeting with the whole world, and lack of trust everywhere.

And once the trust in the management is lost, there is not much to do to bring it back - the best enginners left one by one and the rest are caught in a toxic, sad environment, waiting for their VSP/ISP. I'm sorry I spent so much time waiting for it myself, I should have left years ago.

3D is the best example of micromanagement that squashes creativity and robs intel of any innovation.

Talk about catering to one single person's ego who is single handily ruining TMG

This is just a cut and paste from the more lengthy and more interesting 'ROI on Mobileye' thread.
