We were told we have to work 10% overtime years ago in Aerospace. They actually look at the the submitted hours to see who isn't so they can assign them more work. Just take an extra 4 hours to do your normal workload. After all the money they took from us they deserve it.

You should NOT work un-paid overtime and use those hours to look for another job, for sure.

How many years have you all been doing that now? You know it's been too long. They take it

for granted, now.

You could simply say hell no to overtime. No need to give a reason.

They can demand all they want doesn't mean you have to do it. The worse they can do is lay you off. Once they make depends your time is up so put 150% of your efforts in finding another job.

Or you can be a slave and do what they want until they lay you off anyway. Your choice.

We always have the right to say.."With the reductions in my salary, inflation, and the reduced benifits being offered, unpaid overtime is not acceptable as new condition of employment". Therefore I will temporarily meet your conditions but I will be looking for other employment opportunities outside Honeywell. We all should really be negotiating out in the open so they know how many people are looking for other opportunities. They are slowly keaving the US anyway.

I double checked and it is perfectly legal to require more than 40 hours per week of salaried employees. I'd post the new requirement at Glassdoor specifically mentioning the site involved.

It's amazing how much emphasis Honeywell puts on hours for salaried employees. So illegal.

Thanks for clarifying that time was being charged correctly, just that the expectation was 44 hours minimum. I've only had one manager who would ever consider such a thing and I didn't charge direct when I worked for him. I used to routinely work more than 40 hours a week, not a lot, but some, and charged accordingly, but it was completely voluntary. No more -- 40.0 hours every week.

Ahh... yes, EEI.

I got put on a PIP, and narrowly escaped getting caught in a subsequent RIF because I challenged the validity of this "unwritten requirement". A "Target" quickly formed on my back, and I surely would have been eliminated - but in a strange twist of luck for me - the Manager 2 levels above exited for Medical reasons!

I've heard that the "expectation" at some plants is "verbally" given to be 20%!!

This is called Engineering Effeciency Index

Yes the 'uncompensated" 10% overtime is just that, you are working for free. You are still expected to charge your time for these hours so nothing's illegal since the request was verbal and would be denied if questioned. I use to work much more than that when Honeywell appreciated it and took care of their people. When they hand out a 2% raise once every 3 years, take 50% of the MIP away, charge you through the teeth for health insurance, no work from home, etc., etc., why would I be motivated to give H.W. more than an extra free month's worth of engineering support this year. Maybe Mr. T.M. can share some of that 9.5 million he made last year with his people and then we might be more motivated.

10% "uncompensated" overtime means that the new expectation is a 44 hour week, not a 40 hour week. It does not necessarily mean not time charged correctly and correct time charging should continue. Most of Aero Engineers were routinely working more than 40 hours in Tempe and Phoenix for years and time charging those hours appropriately in accordance with the laws.

Yeah finally some exposure of this problem. This has been going on for more than ten years. Wonder what prompted CBS to feature this? I applaud them for doing so anyway. Too late for most of us but maybe the current administration does something about it? I won't hold my breath.

I was shocked to learn that the 10% thing was illegal. It was explicitly asked for (and by email even)! I think I may have had it in my goals one year.

Uh, how about the link to the story on 60 mins:

http://www.cbsnews.com/news/are-u-s-jobs-vulnerable-to-workers-with-h-1b-visas/

I like the quote (and I already suspected this) "Nearly every major high-tech company, including Apple, Google, Facebook, has employees here on H-1B visas. Media companies too, including CBS."

Yep, even CBS. I'm kind of surprised they would even allow this type of story to air. But it's 15-20 years too late.

Any manager who says that 10% uncompensated (no time charged to a number) is required is a candidate for residence in Kansas (Leavenworth). I'm no fan of how my company has been totally f-d up over the past decade or so, but messing with time charging is a big deal, and the government takes much interest in it. Excellent opportunity to ring the bell or blow the whistle or whatever.

Same BS in manufacturing at Engines. Started like 2008/2009 when the push was on to move most of the manufacturing to Mexico and Check Rep. Machine operators were told if you don't train your replacement you won't be offered a job when we finish with the moves. Of course that was a bold face lie as there was never gonna be any job offers to these people. In fact many of the people that fond jobs in other areas of HON were told they would not be allowed to leave for that new position as they were critical to training the people that were brought up from Mexico!! It was either resign or train your replacement and then we will give you the severance package. Some people that found positions real close to the closure were made offers of 10 to 20% less than their current pay because they knew the people would accept it. If you didn't accept the low ball offer you went out the door with nothing . Leadership people were given bonus's for making closure milestones and most moved to other positions.

I am in Aerospace and haved already trained people in China, India and other so called High Growth Regions (HGR) to do my job. It is only a matter of time that more of us US workers are eventually let go for made up reasons when it really comes down to Corporate Greed. To top it off I was told today by my Sr. Manager that the new expectation is that all exempt employees work a minimum of 10% uncompensated overtime. Maximize profit no matter the cost to the American worker is the true Honeywell mantra.

Tell me again why it is not a good idea to unionize the Engineers like Boeing did!

You can read a transcript of the episode- scroll down the link. Evidently Florida attorney Sara Blackwell is working with people who this has happened to. Here's a short excerpt:

"Sara Blackwell: This is about the companies making the decision that you are worthless to them.

She represents hundreds of U.S. workers who were fired and replaced by foreign workers with H-1B visas.

Sara Blackwell: When you tell someone their real reason for getting rid of these jobs is for cheap foreign labor that should offend everyone.

Bill Whitaker: They have to train the worker who’s going to take their job?

Sara Blackwell: Right. They are told by their company: if you don’t train this person in a way that we approve of them being trained, then you don’t get your severance."

Lots more, go to the link
