Hi! I got a job offer from a startup doing 5G (Tarana Wireless). The job description suits very well to my interests. They have offered higher than my current base but it is a startup, meaning no bonus. Just some decent number of shares have been offered which has no value now (can be big if company goes public-the chances are slim for most startups but this company is growing their engineering size according to linkedin data). I am in a dilemma right now. Hard to make decision but i do like the topic of the work offered there. It can diversify my skills despite not much annual raise. Any advice would be appreciated. I have not worked in a startup before. I do not know what to expect. With startups how can i find out how well they are doing? Not much public info. Thank you.

That depends on how long you had been working at Intel. If you work at Intel quite sometimes, start-up will be very difficult for you, since you have to do everything and there is no one to point finger to. I had some friends who left Intel for a start-up, then 1 year later, go back to Intel. Idiots, in my opinion.

Go to a startup if you want to experience a startup and like that environment, and equally important, you like the people. Stay at Intel if you want a "safe" known choice that will pay you well regardless of the company performance. In the past this I'd ad and you "like the culture". But now Intel has given absolute power to your immediate manager through the flawed focal system, so it's more important to like them as well (vs the culture). Intel cultural superiority is long gone.
So which path is more appealing? Personally, if you are able to try the startup I'd do it. It usually gets harder the older you get and the more obligations you have. .But Intel is a bubble, not real world in any way shape or form. Its own unique approach to just about everything. More perspective is useful in today's fast changing world. Ultimately, you can get canned in both, for arbitrary reasons. No more "lifetime" careers at Intel.
