"Remodeling"

I work at a Kmart in NJ. We have paper signs everywhere that we are "remodeling" the store. Other than bringing in some new mismatched shelves that don't match shelving in the rest of the store AND doing resets throughout the store, there's no effort to paint the dirty walls or fix broken and missing floor tiles. Our bathrooms are disgusting from the 1970s with busted up tile and fixtures and we were obviously overlooked when all of the stores in our region got their bathrooms redone two years ago. And the new shelves they are putting up have nothing on them. Our sporting goods looks ridiculous with half the shelves bare and pantry is equally pathetic looking. Corporate is sending new POGs that increase linear feet of certain sections under this reset but we do not have product to fill the space.

If they are the ones that say "Pardon Our Mess While We Remodel" or something similar, they are just put up so customers won't think that the store is closing. They started doing this a couple of years ago when the mass closings started. Every time a store redid an area like Christmas, toys, etc. where the whole department was reset, customers would start asking if the store was closing or going out of business. They put up these signs to try and get ahead of the the speculation.

Store remodels are just signage changes and resets.

Your store is probably at the tail end of its simple store conversion process. The shelving you are getting helps with getting product that would normally be overstock in the backroom out onto the floor.

Alternatively, your store could be one that got switched to a new format for merchandising and layout. Kmart still has a few stores that are in a 1980s style format. A more uniform format through all the stores allows for greater efficiency with layouts and merchandising.
