In March 2014 Cloudera announced a $900 million funding round, led by Intel Capital ($740 million), for which Intel received 18% share in Cloudera and Intel dropped its own Hadoop distribution and dedicated 70 Intel engineers to work exclusively on Cloudera projects.
70 engineers, in total INTEL spends ~ $15M USD per annum on Cloudera. + 18% of shares bought each for $30 USD. ~ $740M USD.
Any ideas?!

@pyi - once heard AB say average failure 8 or 9 of 10 don't work, Cisco best at 5 or so, Intel something like 7 of 10 fail...seriously...chairman thinks we're better than average at this...They fail because of ridiculous Intel culture, short term financial systems, and the ego's of the incumbent "leaders" (hah!) who take over upon integration but add no value other than political astuteness.
Intel acquisition of Cloudera would doom it.
9 out of ten deals don't work welcome to tech investment.
Perfect example of incompetence at the top - Easily beguiled by marketing talk, no trust on internal expertise or interest in developing it, having zero idea as to where to lead the organization or the business units.
Intel literally bought their way in by paying 2X per share what other investors in a funding round immediately preceding Intel by literally about a month paid. So $350+M for the "privilege" to be a minority investor. Not sure what the point of such an approach could ever have been - other than vanity investment for DB and BK. Ridiculous waste of money, like the many vanity investments BK seems to like (Basis, etc.) Shareholders and BOD should be aghast at the ease at which this company throws money away.
That said, Cloudera is now probably affordable if Intel wants to acquire...watch this space!
Like most others, it was a stupid investment that has sowed nothing but confusion and misdirection in the DCG organization.
