In a surpise Monday afternoon announcement Verizon Communications (VZ) announced a deal with Yum! Brands Inc (YUM) to acquire their subsidiary company Taco Bell for Three Billion dollars.
The unexpected move set off a flurry of late trading as industry analysts debated the pros and cons of a first ever merger between the Telecom and Fast Food industries.
"I think at first people are shocked, but if you look at the nuts and bolts of the deal, you find there are a lot of synergies flowing between these businesses" said VZ spokesman Bull Shashershaw. "We looked at KFC, we looked at Pizza Hut, but we really felt Taco Bell had the most to offer in terms of shared vision".
"Verizon has been noted for its broad appeal to Millennnials with our popular offerings such as go90 and research shows that tacos are popular with Millennials more so in fact than any other demographic group" said Shashershaw. "And we feel this acquisition will allow Verizon to offer two popular services combined into one great customer experience".
Shashershaw had few details about the rumored "VZTaco Mashups"; locations that will offer both food and retail cellphone shopping in a single store location. "I will say one thing, you won't be able to order a hot Doritos Locos Tacos Supreme at a T-Mobil store."he said. "and I think down the road there are going to be some more exciting announcements coming" ...."Stay tuned".
