Thread regarding Intel Corp. layoffs

Intel self-driving cars??

Saw today's press on Intel and BMW...

I wonder why Intel thinks it can outdo Apple and Google and Tesla and others in self driving cars? For us to win, we have to a) have a competitive product and b) have a better product and c) convince people that outsourcing the technology to Intel makes more sense than developing in-house (like Google, Apple, others...)

Kind of like convincing mobile phone makers to source commodity technology from Intel instead of their own ARM chip (That didn't work out too well).

So, if the self-driving function is a commodity -- ie it either works or it doesn't -- how does Intel win versus any old low cost supplier? Its like selling a phone processor (aspire to be Mediatek??)

And if not - getting it right takes a long time - or companies compete on being safer (imagine that) how does Intel out-do the players who have been spending years on this? Do we really have a path to something so much better that everyone has to have it - or fundamental patents like Qualcomm has in LTE/5G etc? I don't think so...

Anyone in the auto driving group who can explain internal thinking?

Anyone who is up to date on all things autonomous driving cars knows damn well that Ford, Chevy, and Toyota are way-way ahead of anything Intel has to offer. The prediction best case is that in 10yrs it will be available as an option. Does ANYONE really think Intel has the staying power i.e. billions year over year being dumped into this project for the next 10yrs without an ROI and only with only a fraction of the market share? Really?

@1mvv, aggreed, not going to work. Can't have Intel software in mission-critical equipment. Just look at the latest AMT fiasco. Old news actually, well put by others..

Good to see that the same bunch of incompetent assclowns who write BIOS and ACPI firmware have found gainful employment writing UEFI implementations.

And yes, thats the same folks who's reponsible for AMT firmware. In fact, I don't see how Intel CPU's can fit into real-time tasks like running vehicles because they are (by design) non-deterministic. Gogle base their autonomous vehicles on ARM, Mobileye use MIPS.

@psc, so then please tell why nobody is using your presciouss x86 in automotive?

All you have to is look at the quality of people working on this at Intel, they haven't got a clue. Big mouths and hot air coming from the U.S. "leaders". They couldn't ride a push bike never mind be at the center of building autonomous cars. You know who you are.

What happens when you are an Intel autonomous car with your family and then all of a sudden the computer says...re-routing..and then the doors lock...and a geo-fence is broadcasted to block your cell phone..and then is says...where is your God now?

Actually it makes perfect sense for Intel to try to get into the autonomous vehicles business. BK and his gang of dead brain clowns got that right. The question is: are they smart enough to get a solution that beat the competition?

First, they need to get all that is needed inside the limited space available in a car. If you see the videos available at Circuit the equipment they use barely fits into the trunk of a car.

Second, they need to find a way to cool all the equipment. Currently we have a lot of problems to keep the processors under the required temperature. It is going to be difficult. Lower power processors will have an advantage because they will require less cooling.

I'm pretty sure it said highly automated cars, not autonomous cars. your point is still valid but its a lower bar they are going after right now.

We have the best technology and kick a$$ in our x86 monopoly so when we venture out of our protected garden and spend a few billions we rock. Just look at phones, tablets and graphics at our track record

🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂

Intel is an attention seeking teenager trying to appear relevant by associating itself all the present day's buzzwords.

According to Doug Davis, Intel will lead in Autonomous vehicles because Intel led the PC standardization in the 1980s and this model applies directly to transportation... LoL
